Why Did a ₹632 Crore Bet Spark This Rally ?

Urban Company shares jumped over 15% after SBI Mutual Fund picked up an additional ~4% stake worth ₹632 crore through bulk deals. The move signals strong institutional confidence despite recent losses, backed by steady revenue growth and long-term platform expansion.
Urban Company’s stock surged as much as 15.4% in early trade on March 18 after SBI Mutual Fund significantly increased its stake in the company. The fund house purchased over 5.7 crore shares across NSE and BSE at an average price of around ₹109.8 per share, taking an additional ~4% stake. This large-scale institutional buying acted as a key trigger for the sharp upward movement in the stock.
The buying interest is notable given the company’s recent financial performance. Urban Company reported a net loss of ₹21.3 crore in Q3 FY26, compared to a profit in the year-ago period. However, the losses were largely attributed to continued investments in scaling its quick housekeeping vertical, InstaHelp. Encouragingly, losses narrowed significantly on a sequential basis, indicating improving operational control.
Despite profitability pressures, the company’s core business remains strong. Revenue from operations grew 33% year-on-year to ₹382.7 crore in Q3, highlighting robust demand across its service categories. Including other income, total income stood at ₹418.8 crore. This consistent growth suggests that the platform’s scalability and service demand remain intact.
Urban Company has remained in focus since its blockbuster IPO in September 2025, which was subscribed over 100 times and listed at a strong premium of more than 50%. As a tech-enabled marketplace for home and beauty services, with presence across India and international markets like the UAE, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia, the company continues to position itself as a long-term play on the digital services ecosystem.
The recent rally reflects growing investor confidence driven by institutional accumulation rather than short-term earnings. While profitability remains a key monitorable, strong revenue growth, strategic investments, and backing from large funds like SBI Mutual Fund suggest that the market is betting on Urban Company’s long-term growth story.
