Vedanta Aluminium is aiming to significantly scale up its operations over the next five years, with Chairman Anil Agarwal setting a target of 10 million tonnes of annual aluminium production capacity and $5 billion in EBITDA as part of the company's long-term growth strategy. The announcement comes as Vedanta’s demerged entities have begun trading independently in the market.
Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Agarwal stated that the aluminium business is expected to increase its production capacity to 6 million tonnes within the next three to three-and-a-half years before reaching the 10 million tonne milestone over a five-year horizon. The company currently operates aluminium production capacity of around 3 million tonnes and is positioning the business as a standalone growth engine following the group’s restructuring.
The expansion plan is part of Vedanta Group’s broader investment strategy, under which the company intends to invest nearly $20 billion across its businesses over the next three to five years. Agarwal has previously highlighted aluminium as one of the most promising sectors for future growth, supported by rising demand from industries such as infrastructure, power transmission, renewable energy, and automobiles.
Vedanta Aluminium is also exploring the development of downstream industrial ecosystems around its operations, with plans to support the creation of hundreds of ancillary industries. The company expects these initiatives to strengthen value addition, improve profitability, and enhance its position in the global aluminium market.
The aluminium business is widely regarded as the most valuable asset among Vedanta’s newly demerged entities and is expected to attract significant investor interest due to its scale, growth prospects, and strategic importance within India’s metals sector.
