Trump Renews Call for US Control of Greenland Ahead of NATO Summit

US President Donald Trump has once again called for the United States to take control of Greenland, arguing that the Arctic island is critical to US national security and accusing Denmark of failing to invest adequately in its defence.

Speaking after arriving for the NATO summit, Trump said Greenland should be under US control rather than Danish administration. He claimed Denmark has not committed sufficient resources to the island despite its strategic importance to the United States.

Trump acknowledged that his earlier proposal to acquire Greenland had strained relations with NATO allies, particularly Denmark, but maintained that the island's location has become increasingly significant amid growing Chinese and Russian activity in the Arctic region.

The US President a

lso suggested that Washington could reconsider its military presence in Europe if allies do not adequately support US strategic priorities. He reiterated criticism of European nations over defence spending while also raising concerns about immigration and energy policies.

Trump's comments overshadowed the NATO summit, where member nations were expected to focus on increasing defence spending, strengthening collective security, and continuing support for Ukraine. The alliance also announced fresh defence investment commitments aimed at enhancing military capabilities.

The renewed remarks revive a long-running diplomatic dispute over Greenland. Both Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected any proposal for the United States to acquire the self-governing Arctic territory, maintaining that Greenland is not for sale.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently indicated that discussions with Denmark and Greenland on Arctic security and future cooperation remain ongoing, suggesting diplomatic engagement on regional security issues continues despite differences over sovereignty.
