Shares of Tech Mahindra came under pressure in early Wednesday trade, falling nearly 4 percent on the NSE to around Rs 1,444, as investors positioned themselves ahead of the company’s March quarter results. The decline reflects a broader pattern seen across IT stocks, where near-term growth visibility remains constrained despite some improvement in profitability metrics.

The weakness in the stock also coincided with a softer broader market tone, with benchmarks such as the Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex trading lower, led in part by IT sector underperformance and a rise in volatility indicators like India VIX. Against this backdrop, Tech Mahindra’s earnings become a key trigger for both company-specific and sector-wide sentiment.

Street expectations suggest a relatively steady quarter operationally, but without any sharp acceleration in growth. Revenue in dollar terms is estimated to grow modestly by around 0.9 percent sequentially to $1,624 million, while rupee revenue is seen rising 2.9 percent to approximately Rs 14,804 crore. However, constant currency growth is expected to remain subdued at about 0.5 percent quarter-on-quarter, highlighting underlying demand softness.

This muted performance is partly attributed to the normalisation of one-off gains recorded in earlier quarters, including contributions from a European auto deal. Additionally, seasonal weakness in the Business Process Services segment is likely to weigh on overall growth momentum. These factors indicate that while headline revenue may show marginal expansion, the underlying demand environment remains uneven.

On the profitability front, the outlook appears relatively stronger. Profit after tax is projected to rise sharply by 34 percent sequentially to around Rs 1,504 crore, while EBIT is estimated at Rs 2,035 crore. Margins are expected to improve by about 60 basis points to 13.7 percent. This expansion is largely driven by internal cost optimisation measures under Project Fortius, benefits from rupee depreciation, and an increased share of offshore delivery.

The margin improvement, however, needs to be viewed in context. While cost efficiencies and currency tailwinds provide near-term support, sustaining margin expansion will depend on consistent revenue growth and better utilisation levels. Investors are increasingly focused on whether these gains are structural or largely cyclical.

From a strategic standpoint, the market’s attention remains firmly on the company’s medium-term targets, particularly its FY27 Vision of achieving 15 percent EBIT margins and delivering revenue growth above the industry average. While the current trajectory shows incremental progress on margins, revenue growth continues to lag, raising questions about execution consistency.

Brokerage views remain divided. Some analysts expect a gradual recovery driven by deal wins and operational restructuring, while others remain cautious due to exposure to traditionally volatile verticals such as telecom and manufacturing. These sectors have seen uneven demand trends globally, which could continue to impact deal pipelines and revenue visibility.

Key monitorables in the upcoming earnings commentary will include the pace of ramp-up in large deals, especially within the telecom segment, which has historically been a core revenue driver for the company. Additionally, investors will closely track developments in the Comviva business, particularly in the context of geopolitical tensions that could influence international operations.

Updates on the company’s strategy, capital allocation priorities, and guidance framework will also be critical. In the absence of strong demand recovery signals, management commentary will play a decisive role in shaping near-term investor sentiment.

From an India market perspective, Tech Mahindra’s performance holds broader significance for the IT sector. The company is often seen as a bellwether for telecom-focused IT services, and its results could provide cues on demand trends in this niche. Continued weakness could reinforce concerns around sectoral growth slowdown, especially at a time when global macro uncertainties persist.
