Swiggy Slides as Quick Commerce Growth Concerns Deepen Amid Rising Competitive Pressure
Shares of Swiggy came under pressure after investors flagged slowing momentum in its quick-commerce business despite improvement in overall quarterly losses and stronger food delivery margins. The sharp reaction highlights how market expectations in the sector are now increasingly tied to execution in rapid delivery rather than core food delivery profitability. The decline also reflected broader concerns around rising crude oil prices, which could increase delivery and logistics costs across India’s online commerce ecosystem.

Shares of Swiggy declined sharply on May 11, falling as much as 7% intraday, as investors reacted negatively to signs of slowing growth in the company’s quick-commerce vertical Instamart. The stock was headed for its steepest single-session decline in more than a month despite the company reporting a narrower quarterly loss and improved profitability metrics in its core food delivery business.
At around 10:20 am, Swiggy shares were trading nearly 4% lower at Rs 268.8 apiece, while shares of rival Eternal also slipped close to 3%. Market sentiment across the online delivery and commerce segment remained cautious as investors evaluated both intensifying competition and the potential impact of rising global crude oil prices on operating costs.
Global oil markets turned volatile after comments from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Iran heightened concerns over energy supply disruptions. Brent crude rose above $105 per barrel, while U.S. crude also witnessed a sharp rally following fears surrounding transit flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Higher fuel prices are particularly relevant for food delivery and quick-commerce companies because logistics expenses form a significant part of their operating structure. Even moderate increases in fuel costs can pressure contribution margins across high-frequency delivery businesses.
Against this backdrop, investor focus remained firmly on Swiggy’s competitive positioning in India’s rapidly evolving quick-commerce market. According to analyst commentary referenced in market reports, concerns have intensified over Instamart potentially losing market share to Blinkit, the quick-commerce platform operated by Eternal. Competition from privately held players such as Zepto, alongside large ecosystem-backed entrants including Amazon and Walmart-backed Flipkart, has further increased pressure on pricing, delivery speed, and customer acquisition spending.
Swiggy reported a consolidated loss of Rs 800 crore for the quarter ended March 31, improving from a loss of Rs 1,065 crore in the previous quarter. While the reduction in losses indicated some operational progress, the market reaction suggested that investors are prioritising growth quality and competitive strength over near-term narrowing of losses.
A key concern emerged from Instamart’s growth trajectory. Gross order value in the quick-commerce segment increased 68.8% year-on-year to Rs 7,881 crore. However, brokerage assessments indicated that the growth pace lagged behind Blinkit’s reported 95.4% expansion during the same period. Analysts at JPMorgan noted that the differential could indicate ongoing market-share erosion in a segment where scale advantages and execution efficiency are becoming increasingly critical.
The management attempted to reassure investors by highlighting improvements in operating efficiency. Instamart’s contribution margin improved sequentially by 65 basis points to negative 1.8%, reflecting tighter control over variable costs. The company also stated that it had strategically reduced exposure to low average order value customers and unprofitable transactions. According to management commentary, the share of such orders was halved during the period as Swiggy focused on improving the quality of demand rather than pursuing volume growth at any cost.
The company’s core food delivery business remained a relatively stronger area. Gross order value in food delivery rose around 23% to Rs 9,005 crore, while margins improved meaningfully compared with the previous year. Chief Executive Officer Sriharsha Majety said the food delivery segment had crossed Rs 1,000 crore in annual adjusted EBITDA, indicating that the business is beginning to demonstrate stronger operational leverage.
From a broader sector perspective, the latest developments reinforce how India’s quick-commerce industry is entering a more demanding phase. Earlier investor enthusiasm was largely driven by rapid expansion and customer acquisition, but market expectations are now shifting toward sustainable profitability, execution discipline, and defensible market share.
For Indian markets, the reaction in Swiggy and Eternal signals that listed internet and technology platforms could continue to witness elevated volatility whenever growth metrics show signs of moderation. Investors are increasingly benchmarking companies not just on revenue expansion but also on contribution margins, order economics, and cash burn trajectories.
