Indian equity markets came under pressure on October 16 as benchmark indices reversed from their intraday highs, with profit booking emerging after the Sensex and Nifty crossed important levels. The Sensex fell around 450 points from the days high, while the Nifty slipped below the 22950 mark during early trade.
At 9:34 am, the Sensex was down 240.17 points, or 0.32 percent, at 74075.44, while the Nifty declined 54.10 points, or 0.24 percent, to 22943.25. Market breadth remained relatively balanced, with 1586 shares advancing, 1437 declining and 152 remaining unchanged.
Profit booking was one of the key factors weighing on sentiment after the Sensex crossed 74500 and the Nifty moved above 23050. The failure to sustain these levels prompted investors to lock in gains following the recent recovery in the benchmark indices.
Volatility also increased during the session. India VIX, the markets volatility gauge, rose nearly 3 percent to 14.42, signalling increased caution and the possibility of short term weakness in equities.
From a technical perspective, analysts identified the 23000 to 23100 zone as an important resistance area for the Nifty. Pabitro Mukherjee, Deputy Vice President Research at Bajaj Broking, said a sustained move above 23100 could extend the ongoing recovery towards 23500. Conversely, failure to break the resistance zone could lead to consolidation between 22500 and 23100.
The near term recovery remains intact as long as the Nifty holds above 22500, according to the technical assessment. However, a decisive move above 23050 is considered important for the next phase of bullish momentum.
