S.B. Ravi Pandit, the co-founder of KPIT Technologies, passed away in Pune at the age of 71, marking the end of a significant chapter in India’s automotive technology evolution. Over more than three decades, Pandit helped build KPIT from a relatively small engineering and IT services firm into one of India’s most recognised automotive software players with a global footprint across the US, Europe, and Asia.

KPIT’s software solutions today support millions of vehicles globally, reflecting the company’s strategic positioning in next-generation mobility technologies including electric vehicles, autonomous systems, embedded software, and vehicle connectivity.

Pandit co-founded the company in 1990 alongside Kishor Patil when it operated under the name KPIT Cummins. At a time when India’s IT industry was still largely identified with outsourcing and enterprise software services, KPIT took a differentiated path by focusing on engineering-intensive mobility solutions. That early strategic choice eventually placed the company in a favourable position as global automakers accelerated investments in software-defined vehicles.

The growth trajectory of KPIT mirrors the broader transformation underway in the automotive industry. Over the last decade, automobile manufacturing has increasingly shifted from being hardware-centric to software-led. Advanced driver-assistance systems, battery management software, autonomous driving architecture, connected vehicle platforms, and digital cockpit systems have become central to vehicle development. KPIT emerged as one of the Indian firms capable of servicing these complex engineering requirements for global original equipment manufacturers.

Pandit’s role was not confined to business expansion alone. He was also active in public policy discussions, urban development initiatives, and sustainability advocacy. His association with clean energy and mobility-related initiatives aligned closely with India’s push toward decarbonisation and electric mobility adoption. Industry observers often viewed him as one of the early voices arguing that India could play a meaningful role in the global mobility software ecosystem rather than remain limited to low-cost manufacturing.

His passing comes at a time when India’s automotive technology ecosystem is gaining increasing global attention. International vehicle manufacturers are expanding software partnerships with Indian engineering firms as automobiles become increasingly digitised. This trend has benefitted companies specialising in embedded systems, semiconductor-linked software, artificial intelligence for mobility, and EV engineering platforms.

For the Indian technology sector, KPIT’s rise under Pandit demonstrated that specialised vertical-focused software businesses could achieve global relevance outside the traditional IT services model dominated by banking, telecom, and enterprise outsourcing. The company’s automotive-centric approach helped create a differentiated identity in a highly competitive export-oriented software industry.

The development also carries broader sectoral significance. India has been positioning itself as a major engineering and R&D destination for global mobility companies amid rising software content in vehicles. Firms operating in automotive software, EV systems, and intelligent mobility solutions may continue to attract investor attention as automakers globally increase spending on digital architectures and electrification.

India's 2026 Monsoon : When the Rain Becomes a Risk

After two consecutive years of above-normal rainfall, India faces a significantly weaker 2026 southwest monsoon, with meteorological agencies forecasting rainfall at around 90% of the Long Period Average amid rising El Niño risks. A deficient monsoon could weigh on agricultural output, rural incomes, food inflation, and overall economic growth, while creating sector-specific winners and losers across the equity market.
