Safe Passage of LNG Tanker Disha Through Hormuz Boosts Prospects for 34 India Bound Vessels

The successful transit of LNG carrier Disha through the Strait of Hormuz has raised hopes for the movement of 34 India-bound vessels stranded in the Persian Gulf amid months of regional conflict. The development follows a US-Iran agreement aimed at restoring navigation through the critical energy corridor, although shipping operators remain cautious due to lingering security concerns.

The safe passage of LNG carrier Disha through the Strait of Hormuz has strengthened expectations that 34 Indian- and foreign-flagged vessels awaiting clearance in the Persian Gulf may soon resume their journeys to Indian ports. The breakthrough comes after the United States and Iran announced an agreement intended to facilitate the reopening of the strategically important waterway.

Disha, carrying approximately 62,370 metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas from Qatar, successfully crossed the strait and is expected to arrive at Dahej in Gujarat. The vessel is managed by a consortium led by Shipping Corporation of India and is among the first major commercial ships to navigate the route following the diplomatic breakthrough.

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy chokepoint, has witnessed severe disruptions since late February after military action involving the United States, Israel, and Iran led to a sharp decline in maritime traffic. The conflict left numerous commercial vessels stranded and significantly affected global oil and LNG trade flows.

While Disha's transit signals improving conditions, shipping companies and insurers remain cautious. Industry participants continue to seek greater clarity on mine-clearing operations, navigational safety, and the durability of the US-Iran agreement before resuming normal operations through the corridor. Experts warn that a complete normalization of shipping activity could take several weeks or months.

For India, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is particularly significant as the route is critical for energy imports, including crude oil, LNG, and LPG supplies from the Gulf region. The successful passage of Disha is therefore viewed as a positive signal for the restoration of energy supply chains and maritime trade connectivity.
