Rupee weakens toward 91 per dollar as strong US data and Iran tensions boost dollar

The Indian rupee opened sharply weaker, slipping close to the psychologically important 91 level as global risk aversion lifted the US dollar. Strong American economic data, a hawkish Federal Reserve outlook, and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are combining to pressure emerging market currencies, including India’s.

The Indian rupee began Friday’s session on a weak note, sliding nearly 30 paise to around 90.94 against the US dollar, reflecting a surge in the greenback driven by strong US macroeconomic indicators and escalating geopolitical tensions involving Iran. The sharp move also marked a break from the relatively narrow trading band the currency had maintained in recent sessions.

The decline comes after a holiday-shortened week in domestic markets, which left liquidity thin and amplified the impact of global cues at the open. Prior to the fall, the rupee had largely oscillated between roughly 90.50 and 90.70 for over a week, supported by intermittent central bank intervention and defensive dollar buying by importers.

What changed overnight was a decisive strengthening of the US dollar. Robust American economic data reinforced expectations that the US Federal Reserve may maintain a hawkish stance for longer, pushing US yields higher and attracting global capital toward dollar-denominated assets. At the same time, renewed tensions between the United States and Iran triggered a classic flight to safety, benefiting the dollar as a reserve currency.

Oil prices also moved higher after US leadership intensified rhetoric toward Iran, adding another layer of pressure on the rupee. For India, which is a major crude importer, rising oil prices typically widen the current account deficit and increase demand for dollars from energy companies. This structural dynamic tends to weaken the domestic currency during periods of oil price spikes.

Market participants noted that aggressive dollar purchases by importers particularly oil companies and precious metal buyers- compounded the pressure. Such hedging demand often accelerates when currency depreciation expectations build, creating a feedback loop that can push the exchange rate lower even without large capital outflows.

There are indications that the Reserve Bank of India has been active in the market in recent sessions, likely selling dollars intermittently to prevent disorderly depreciation. However, central bank intervention generally aims to smooth volatility rather than defend any specific level. The sharp opening gap suggests global forces temporarily overwhelmed domestic stabilisation efforts.

The dollar index, which tracks the US currency against a basket of major peers, remained firm near multi-month highs and was on course for its strongest weekly performance since October 2025. This broad-based dollar strength indicates that the rupee’s decline is part of a wider emerging-market currency adjustment rather than an India-specific event.

Looking ahead, currency traders expect volatility to remain elevated, particularly as global investors reassess interest-rate trajectories and geopolitical risks. Analysts have also flagged the importance of capital flows in March -typically a sensitive period due to fiscal year-end dynamics in India which could influence the rupee’s near-term direction.

From a policy perspective, sustained depreciation toward or beyond 91 per dollar could complicate India’s inflation outlook. A weaker currency raises the cost of imports, especially energy, fertilisers, and electronics, potentially feeding into wholesale and consumer prices. While the RBI retains substantial foreign exchange reserves, persistent global shocks may limit its willingness to expend reserves aggressively.
