Retail Fuel Prices Stay Stable Despite Crude Oil Surge

Retail petrol and diesel prices across India have remained largely insulated from the latest surge in international crude oil prices, even as geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran continue to disrupt global energy markets.

Brent crude rose above $101 a barrel on Thursday, while West Texas Intermediate crude climbed to around $96 a barrel. The latest increase follows a fresh escalation in the US Iran conflict, which has now entered its seventh month. US forces destroyed five Iranian crude tankers on Tuesday in retaliation, adding to concerns over disruptions to oil supplies and shipping routes.

The escalation has heightened fears of a further spike in crude prices. Goldman Sachs has warned that oil could rise above $120 a barrel if attacks on shipping continue to intensify, potentially increasing pressure on global fuel markets and energy costs.

Despite the sharp movement in international crude prices, domestic retail fuel prices have remained stable. In Mumbai, petrol is priced at ₹98 per litre and diesel is also priced at ₹98 per litre on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

The outlook for crude prices remains uncertain as markets assess both the intensity of the conflict and the possibility of a prolonged disruption to oil transportation. Any sustained increase in international crude prices could eventually put pressure on fuel markets, although the impact on Indian retail prices will also depend on domestic pricing decisions, currency movements and other market factors.

US President Donald Trump, however, has predicted that the conflict will end after the US midterm elections in November. He also said that crude oil prices would decline sharply once the conflict ends.

Trump told reporters before leaving for Dallas to attend the Republican Party's midterm convention that he expected the war to end immediately after the election, arguing that Iran would not be able to sustain the conflict for much longer. He further said that oil prices would tumble downward after the election.

For now, Indian consumers remain relatively insulated from the global crude oil rally, but any further escalation in the US Iran conflict or disruption to crude shipments could increase risks for India's fuel costs and broader inflation outlook.
