Reliance Industries shares rallied 8 percent on November 2, following the company's strong July-September quarter earnings, providing a significant boost to the benchmark Nifty 50 index. Historical analysis suggests that substantial gains in the heavyweight stock have often been followed by positive returns for the broader market over the subsequent month.

According to an analysis by Singapore-based trader Ashish Gupta, the Nifty 50 has delivered positive returns in 17 out of 20 instances when Reliance Industries shares closed at least 5 percent higher in a single trading session.

Over the subsequent 21 trading sessions, the benchmark index recorded a median return of 3.4 percent. However, the relationship was less pronounced over shorter periods. The Nifty 50 delivered a median return of 0.1 percent on the following trading day, closing higher in 12 of the 20 instances. Over the next five trading sessions, the median return stood at 1 percent, with the index advancing in 14 instances.

The rally in Reliance Industries also contributed significantly to the broader market's gains on November 2. The company's market capitalisation climbed to a record Rs 17 lakh crore, while its shares recorded their largest intraday gain in more than six years. Reliance Industries contributed 91 points to the Nifty 50's 170-point advance, accounting for more than half of the index's gains.

The strong share price performance followed the company's record financial results for the July-September quarter. Reliance Industries reported consolidated revenue of Rs 3.62 lakh crore, marking a 28 percent year-on-year increase. EBITDA rose 24 percent to a record Rs 62,409 crore, while net profit increased 34 percent to Rs 29,550 crore.

The company's oil-to-chemicals business, digital services and retail operations were the key contributors to the strong quarterly performance.

The historical relationship between Reliance Industries' share price movements and Nifty 50 returns highlights the potential influence of heavyweight stocks on benchmark performance. However, past market trends do not guarantee similar outcomes, and the index's future direction will also depend on broader market conditions, earnings developments and investor sentiment.
