NTPC Limited has commissioned 64.76 MW of solar generation capacity at the 225 MW Khavda Solar PV Project in Gujarat through its subsidiary NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, operating under NTPC Green Energy Limited. The newly commissioned capacity became operational on July 24, 2026, marking another milestone in the group's renewable energy expansion strategy.

The commissioning forms part of the larger 225 MW Khavda Solar PV Project, one of several renewable assets being developed within Gujarat's Khavda renewable energy zone. The region has emerged as one of India's most significant clean energy hubs due to its vast land availability, high solar irradiation and large-scale transmission infrastructure being developed to support utility-scale renewable projects.

Following the latest addition, NTPC Group's total installed generation capacity has increased to 91,030 MW, while its commercial installed capacity now stands at 89,950 MW. The distinction reflects projects that have been commissioned versus those fully declared for commercial operation. For investors, the gradual conversion of installed capacity into commercial capacity remains an important indicator of future revenue generation.

The commissioning also lifts the installed capacity of the NTPC Green Energy Group to 10,786.56 MW. This highlights the increasing contribution of renewable assets within NTPC's diversified generation portfolio, which has historically been dominated by thermal power. Over the past few years, the company has accelerated investments in solar, wind and hybrid renewable projects to align with India's long-term energy transition objectives.

What is changing is the composition of NTPC's generation mix. As renewable capacity continues to rise, the company is gradually reducing its dependence on conventional thermal additions while positioning itself to participate in India's rapidly expanding clean energy market. Incremental solar commissioning also supports better utilisation of transmission infrastructure being developed for renewable energy corridors.

The Khavda renewable energy region is strategically important because it is expected to become one of the world's largest renewable energy parks. Large-scale projects developed in this region are expected to play a significant role in helping India meet its ambitious renewable energy capacity targets over the coming decade. NTPC's continued participation strengthens its position among the country's leading renewable power developers.

From a business perspective, every new commissioned unit contributes to long-term revenue visibility once commercial operations commence under power purchase agreements. Renewable assets typically generate stable cash flows over extended periods, supported by contracted tariffs and lower operating costs compared with conventional power plants. The company has disclosed the commissioning through its regulatory filing, reflecting continued execution of its renewable capacity pipeline.

Market Impact on India

The commissioning reinforces India's ongoing renewable energy expansion and supports the country's objective of increasing clean energy generation capacity. Continued additions by large public-sector utilities also strengthen investor confidence in India's energy transition roadmap and grid-scale renewable deployment.

Sector Impact

The development is positive for the power and renewable energy sectors. Incremental solar capacity supports equipment suppliers, transmission infrastructure providers and developers participating in utility-scale renewable projects. It also reflects sustained capital expenditure within the clean energy ecosystem.

Bull vs Bear Scenario

The bullish case is that continued renewable commissioning strengthens NTPC's long-term earnings visibility while improving the sustainability of its generation portfolio. A growing renewable base could also enhance valuation as investors increasingly favour clean energy exposure.

The bearish case is that renewable projects generally deliver lower regulated returns than some conventional assets, while execution delays, transmission availability or tariff pressures could moderate earnings growth despite higher installed capacity.

Risk Section

Key risks include delays in achieving commercial operation for commissioned assets, grid integration challenges, changes in renewable tariff frameworks and execution risks associated with large-scale solar developments. Weather variability and transmission constraints also remain operational considerations for renewable generation.

Overall, the commissioning of additional capacity at the Khavda Solar PV Project reflects NTPC's continued progress in expanding its renewable energy portfolio while supporting India's broader clean energy transition.
