Shares of JBM Auto rose sharply on Friday after reports emerged that global investment firm Bain Capital is in talks to invest in the company’s electric vehicle manufacturing business. JBM Auto shares were trading 6.93% higher on the NSE at 10:20 am.
According to an Economic Times report, Bain Capital is discussing the acquisition of a minority stake in JBM Auto’s electric vehicle manufacturing unit. The investment could be worth up to Rs 2,850 crore, or around $300 million. Discussions are currently ongoing and the terms of the potential transaction have not been finalized.
JBM Auto is a leading player in India’s electric bus market, with a reported 79% market share. The company also holds more than 50% of the intercity electric luxury coach market, highlighting its strong position in the country’s growing electric commercial mobility segment.
The potential investment comes as JBM Auto continues to expand its electric vehicle operations. In the first quarter of FY27, the company reported income of Rs 1,473.94 crore, representing a 13.9% increase from Rs 1,294.03 crore in the corresponding quarter of FY26. Profit rose 13.4% year on year to Rs 44.26 crore, while expenses increased 14.9% to Rs 1,405.98 crore.
Bain Capital has also been increasing its exposure to the clean mobility and automotive components ecosystem. In January, the investment firm made a strategic growth investment in Dhoot Transmission, acquiring a reported 40% to 45% stake in the company for around $1 billion.
Dhoot Transmission subsequently launched its initial public offering earlier this month with a total issue size of Rs 3,066.86 crore. The IPO received strong investor interest and was subscribed 74.21 times overall.
A potential Bain Capital investment in JBM Auto could provide the company with additional capital to support expansion in electric mobility and strengthen its manufacturing capabilities. However, the investment remains under discussion and any transaction would be subject to the finalization of terms and necessary approvals.
