IT stocks gain ground as investors shift to defensives amid global uncertainty

Indian IT stocks outperformed a declining broader market as geopolitical tensions and currency movements triggered a rotation into export-oriented sectors. The trend signals a defensive positioning by investors ahead of earnings season and rising volatility.

Indian equity markets began the week on a cautious note, with benchmark indices slipping amid weak global cues and heightened geopolitical tensions. However, one pocket of resilience stood out information technology. Export-oriented IT stocks traded higher in early deals on Monday, bucking the broader market trend as investors repositioned portfolios in response to macro uncertainty.

At around 09:30 am, the Nifty IT index was up 0.78 percent, even as the Sensex declined nearly 400 points to hover around 72,900 levels and the Nifty slipped below 22,600. Market breadth remained firmly negative, indicating that the broader sell-off was widespread, with declining stocks significantly outnumbering gainers. Despite this, IT stocks emerged as relative outperformers, supported by a mix of currency tailwinds and defensive appeal.

Within the IT pack, Wipro led the gains with a rise of over 2 percent, while Infosys and Tech Mahindra advanced more than 1 percent each. Their presence among the top gainers on the Nifty highlights a clear sectoral rotation rather than stock-specific triggers.

The shift comes at a time when volatility has picked up sharply due to escalating tensions in West Asia. Rising geopolitical risks typically push investors toward sectors that offer earnings stability and global revenue exposure. IT companies, with a significant share of revenues derived from overseas markets, tend to benefit in such environments—especially when the rupee weakens.

Currency dynamics have played a crucial role in Monday’s trade. A softer rupee enhances the earnings visibility of IT exporters, as a large portion of their revenues is denominated in US dollars. This acts as a natural hedge against domestic economic uncertainty and makes the sector attractive during risk-off phases.

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, indicated that the sector’s recent strength is not entirely sentiment-driven. According to him, there is a short-term trading opportunity emerging in IT stocks, supported by expectations of better-than-anticipated Q4 earnings and the positive impact of rupee depreciation. His comments also hint at a possible tactical allocation rather than a structural shift at this stage.

The broader market context reinforces this narrative. The India VIX, a key gauge of market volatility, rose nearly 4 percent, reflecting growing nervousness among investors. Elevated volatility often leads to capital rotation into defensives sectors that offer relatively stable earnings and lower sensitivity to domestic cyclical factors. IT, along with metals and PSU banks, was among the few segments trading in positive territory, while sectors such as oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and financials faced selling pressure.

From a sectoral perspective, the move underscores a temporary rebalancing rather than a fundamental re-rating of IT stocks. Over the past year, the sector has faced concerns around global demand slowdown, discretionary IT spending cuts, and delayed deal conversions. However, short-term triggers such as currency movements and earnings expectations can override these concerns in the near term.

For Indian markets, this trend reflects a broader defensive shift. When global uncertainty rises, foreign institutional investors and domestic funds alike tend to increase exposure to export-driven sectors. This not only supports IT stocks but also provides some cushion to the indices during broader sell-offs.

India's 2026 Monsoon : When the Rain Becomes a Risk

After two consecutive years of above-normal rainfall, India faces a significantly weaker 2026 southwest monsoon, with meteorological agencies forecasting rainfall at around 90% of the Long Period Average amid rising El Niño risks. A deficient monsoon could weigh on agricultural output, rural incomes, food inflation, and overall economic growth, while creating sector-specific winners and losers across the equity market.
