IndiGo Shifts Strategy Toward Premium Customer Experience After FY26 Loss

IndiGo is shifting its long-term strategy from expanding market share to enhancing customer experience through premium offerings, technology, and service innovation. The transition comes despite the airline reporting its third-largest annual loss in FY26, as it prepares to strengthen its position in both domestic and international markets.

InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, has outlined a strategic shift that prioritizes customer preference over market share, marking a new phase in the airline's growth journey. The announcement came alongside the company's FY26 annual report, in which it reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 2,394 crore despite a 5 percent year-on-year increase in revenue from operations to Rs 84,962 crore.

In his message to shareholders, Co-founder and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia stated that IndiGo's ambition has evolved beyond maintaining its leadership in India's domestic aviation market. He said the airline now aims to become the preferred choice for customers globally by focusing on operational excellence, superior customer experience, and innovation.

The strategic shift reflects IndiGo's changing priorities after securing a dominant position in the domestic aviation sector with a market share exceeding 60 percent. Rather than relying primarily on network expansion and competitive pricing, the airline plans to differentiate itself through premium products, digital capabilities, and service quality.

The move follows significant operational challenges faced by the airline in late 2025, when disruptions linked to changes in pilot scheduling and stricter Flight Duty Time Limitation regulations led to the cancellation of more than 4,500 flights over an eleven-day period. The disruption affected over one million passengers and resulted in a sharp decline in InterGlobe Aviation's market valuation.

In response, IndiGo has accelerated its premiumization strategy by introducing IndiGoStretch, a business-class style product on select domestic routes, while expanding investments in digital technologies and customer service enhancements. The airline has also started inducting leased wide-body aircraft ahead of the scheduled delivery of Airbus A350 aircraft, supporting its plans to expand long-haul international operations.

Rahul Bhatia emphasized that the airline's long-term objective is to create value for customers, employees, shareholders, and the broader economy while building a globally respected Indian aviation brand. He also reiterated the role of aviation in supporting India's economic development by improving connectivity, facilitating trade, promoting tourism, attracting investment, and generating employment.
