Indian Markets Edge Higher as IT Buying Counters Geopolitical Uncertainty
Indian benchmark indices opened higher on Friday, supported by strong gains in information technology stocks following a key AI-focused partnership announcement by Wipro. Investor sentiment was also influenced by developments in West Asia, where reports of a possible extension of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran helped ease concerns around global trade routes and energy supplies.

Indian equity markets traded in positive territory during early trading on Friday, with gains in information technology stocks providing support to benchmark indices despite lingering geopolitical uncertainty in West Asia.
At around 9:30 a.m., the BSE Sensex was trading 127.77 points higher at 75,995.56, while the NSE Nifty 50 gained 26.45 points to 23,933.60. The advance reflected selective buying across sectors, particularly within technology stocks, as investors balanced domestic corporate developments against evolving global geopolitical signals.
A key driver of market sentiment was strong buying interest in IT counters after Wipro announced an artificial intelligence partnership with ServiceNow. The development boosted optimism around the sector’s ability to capture emerging AI-led digital transformation opportunities. As a result, the Nifty IT index climbed as much as 2% during the session, outperforming broader market indices.
The renewed interest in technology shares comes at a time when investors are closely monitoring the earnings outlook for export-oriented IT companies. Artificial intelligence, automation, and enterprise software modernization continue to be viewed as important growth themes for the sector. Any indication that Indian IT companies can strengthen their position in these areas is likely to attract investor attention, particularly amid concerns over global economic growth and discretionary technology spending.
Global developments also remained firmly on investors’ radar. Market participants assessed reports indicating that the United States and Iran had reached an understanding to extend a ceasefire arrangement and ease restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the agreement reportedly awaits formal approval from U.S. President Donald Trump, while Iranian state media indicated that discussions had not yet been finalized.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most strategically important maritime corridors, handling a significant share of global oil shipments. Any reduction in tensions in the region could help stabilize energy markets and lower concerns over supply disruptions. For India, which imports a substantial portion of its crude oil requirements, a stable geopolitical environment in West Asia is generally viewed as supportive for inflation management, fiscal stability, and corporate profitability.
From a market perspective, easing geopolitical tensions can improve global risk appetite and encourage capital flows into emerging markets, including India. At the same time, investors remain cautious as the reported ceasefire extension has not yet received final confirmation from all parties involved.
For Indian markets, the immediate focus remains on sector-specific opportunities. Technology stocks could continue to attract attention if AI-related investments translate into stronger revenue visibility and improved order pipelines. The sector has faced periods of demand uncertainty in recent quarters, making strategic partnerships and innovation-led announcements increasingly important for sentiment.

India's 2026 Monsoon : When the Rain Becomes a Risk
After two consecutive years of above-normal rainfall, India faces a significantly weaker 2026 southwest monsoon, with meteorological agencies forecasting rainfall at around 90% of the Long Period Average amid rising El Niño risks. A deficient monsoon could weigh on agricultural output, rural incomes, food inflation, and overall economic growth, while creating sector-specific winners and losers across the equity market.
