India targets one billion 5G users by 2030 as telecom adoption accelerates nationwide

India’s telecom expansion is entering a scale phase, with the government projecting nearly one billion 5G users within the next five years. The statement underscores both rapid infrastructure deployment and the central role of digital connectivity in economic growth. For investors and industry stakeholders, it signals sustained demand across telecom, devices, digital services, and data infrastructure.

India’s transition to next-generation telecom networks is moving from rollout to mass adoption, with the government projecting that 5G subscribers could reach 100 crore by 2030. Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia made the announcement at the Rising Bharat Summit 2026, highlighting the pace at which India has deployed and scaled the technology across the country.

India’s telecom journey has historically lagged early adopters in developed markets, but the current cycle marks a departure. According to the minister, the country completed one of the world’s fastest 5G rollouts in just 22 months. Out of roughly 120 crore mobile users, about 40 crore are already on 5G networks, indicating a rapid migration from legacy technologies.

The shift reflects a broader structural change in how connectivity is perceived. Telecom services are no longer viewed as discretionary consumption but as core infrastructure enabling digital payments, e-commerce, remote work, online education, and public services. India’s data consumption patterns already rank among the highest globally, and widespread 5G availability could further accelerate bandwidth-intensive applications such as streaming, cloud computing, artificial intelligence services, and industrial automation.

The government’s projection of one billion 5G users implies that most incremental mobile growth over the next five years will come from upgrades rather than new connections. This suggests rising device replacement cycles, falling handset prices, and expanding coverage in semi-urban and rural regions. The policy narrative also positions telecom as a foundational pillar of India’s digital economy ambitions, aligning with initiatives around manufacturing, smart cities, and digital governance.
