India Prepares Fresh Oil And Gas Exploration Push Using Advanced Seismic Technology

India is preparing a renewed push to identify domestic oil and gas reserves by reprocessing legacy seismic data and conducting fresh 3D geological surveys across multiple sedimentary basins. The move reflects the government’s broader strategy to improve long-term energy security as crude import dependence continues to remain structurally high.

India’s energy exploration strategy is entering another phase of technological modernization as the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas begins a nationwide effort to reassess old geological data for untapped hydrocarbon potential. In a public notice issued on Monday, the government invited companies to participate in the reprocessing of legacy seismic data and the execution of fresh 3D seismic surveys across several sedimentary basins in the country.

The initiative, being coordinated through the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH), is aimed at improving India’s understanding of underground oil and gas reserves using modern imaging and interpretation technologies. The broader objective, according to the ministry notice, is to strengthen India’s energy security and reduce long-term dependence on imported crude oil. More details regarding survey locations, technical scope and bidding conditions are expected to become public from June 1.

The development signals a policy-level continuation of India’s attempt to revive domestic exploration activity at a time when the country imports nearly 85% of its crude oil requirement. Global geopolitical instability, volatile energy prices and shipping route disruptions have repeatedly exposed India’s vulnerability to external energy shocks over the past few years. Against this backdrop, the Centre has increasingly focused on improving domestic production capabilities and expanding exploration activity in both onshore and offshore regions.

The latest plan is not about immediate drilling or confirmed discoveries. Instead, it represents an attempt to revisit older geological datasets collected decades ago, when exploration technologies were less sophisticated. Advances in seismic imaging, high-performance computing and subsurface interpretation now allow geologists to identify hydrocarbon structures with significantly higher accuracy than earlier generations of surveys.

Seismic surveys are considered the backbone of hydrocarbon exploration. The process involves sending sound waves beneath the earth’s surface and analysing the reflected signals to map underground rock formations. These surveys help exploration companies determine whether commercially viable oil or natural gas deposits may exist before expensive drilling operations begin.

Government officials believe that several Indian sedimentary basins may still hold unexplored or poorly understood hydrocarbon reserves because earlier datasets lacked modern processing capabilities. By reprocessing these datasets and conducting additional 3D surveys, policymakers aim to create a more detailed geological understanding that can support future exploration licensing and investment activity.

The initiative also aligns with the government’s broader efforts to improve India’s exploration intensity. Compared with several global energy-producing nations, India remains underexplored despite having multiple sedimentary basins spread across offshore and inland regions. Industry experts have long argued that low exploration density, complex approvals and limited private participation historically constrained domestic hydrocarbon discovery rates.

The move follows reports that the government is simultaneously preparing a large offshore geological survey programme along India’s eastern coastline. Areas expected to receive focus include the Purnea and Mahanadi Basin, Krishna Godavari Basin, Cauvery Basin and the Andaman East Basin. These regions are strategically important because some already host producing hydrocarbon assets, while others remain relatively underexplored despite favourable geological indicators.

From a market perspective, the announcement may gradually improve sentiment around India’s upstream energy ecosystem, although the financial impact is unlikely to be immediate. Exploration cycles in the oil and gas industry are typically long-duration projects involving seismic mapping, data interpretation, exploratory drilling, reserve certification and eventual production development. Commercial outcomes, if any, may take years to materialise.

Still, the renewed focus on seismic exploration could support demand visibility for companies involved in geophysical surveys, offshore services, drilling infrastructure and exploration technology. Public sector upstream firms may also benefit indirectly if future licensing opportunities expand across promising basins. However, the government has not yet announced any specific exploration blocks, production-sharing rounds or investment commitments linked to the current exercise.
