India May GST Growth Slows as Revenue Collection Rises to Rs 1.94 Lakh Crore

India’s GST collections rose 3.2% year-on-year to ₹1.94 lakh crore in May 2026, indicating that tax revenues remain resilient despite a moderation from the record collections seen at the start of the fiscal year. The latest numbers suggest economic activity remains intact, although the pace of consumption and trade growth appears less aggressive than in previous months.

India’s Goods and Services Tax collections rose to ₹1.94 lakh crore in May 2026, marking a 3.2% increase from a year earlier and extending the government’s run of strong indirect tax collections into the new financial year. The latest figure comes after April’s record-breaking GST revenue and provides an early signal of underlying economic activity during a period marked by global uncertainty and volatility in commodity markets.

The May collections reflect business transactions undertaken during April, making the data an important indicator of domestic demand, manufacturing activity, imports, and overall tax compliance. While the growth rate moderated compared to the stronger expansion witnessed in recent quarters, collections remaining close to the ₹2 lakh crore mark indicate that the tax base continues to expand and revenue buoyancy remains largely intact.

According to official data, gross GST collections during the first two months of FY27 reached ₹4.37 lakh crore, representing a 6.2% year-on-year increase. The cumulative figure follows a strong April performance when GST revenues crossed an all-time high of ₹2.42 lakh crore, supported by robust import-related tax collections and steady domestic transactions.

The latest revenue numbers arrive at a time when policymakers are closely monitoring the impact of disruptions in West Asia, fluctuations in crude oil prices, and evolving global trade conditions. Collections for May represent the second consecutive month after geopolitical tensions in the region intensified, making the data relevant for assessing whether external shocks are affecting India’s economic momentum.

From a fiscal perspective, sustained GST collections strengthen the government’s revenue position and provide greater flexibility for infrastructure spending, welfare programmes, and fiscal consolidation targets. Stable tax receipts also reduce dependence on non-tax revenues and support state government finances through GST compensation and settlement mechanisms.

The moderation in growth, however, may indicate that the exceptionally high pace of revenue expansion seen in previous months is normalising. Earlier GST data had shown that import-related collections were contributing significantly to overall growth, while domestic consumption growth was relatively more measured. Economists and market participants will therefore watch future data closely to determine whether the softer growth rate reflects temporary base effects or broader demand moderation.

India's 2026 Monsoon : When the Rain Becomes a Risk

After two consecutive years of above-normal rainfall, India faces a significantly weaker 2026 southwest monsoon, with meteorological agencies forecasting rainfall at around 90% of the Long Period Average amid rising El Niño risks. A deficient monsoon could weigh on agricultural output, rural incomes, food inflation, and overall economic growth, while creating sector-specific winners and losers across the equity market.
