India’s net direct tax collections rose 13 percent year on year to Rs 12.1 lakh crore between April 1 and September 17 2026, according to data released by the Income Tax Department.
Gross direct tax collections increased more than 15 percent year on year to Rs 14.3 lakh crore during the period. The difference between gross and net collections reflects tax refunds issued during the period.
The increase in direct tax collections indicates continued growth in government tax revenues during the first half of the financial year 2026-27. Direct taxes include corporate income tax and personal income tax and are an important source of government revenue.
The latest collection data comes ahead of the second half of FY27 and provides an indication of the pace of revenue generation so far in the financial year.
Sustained growth in direct tax collections can support government finances and provide greater fiscal flexibility, subject to the broader trajectory of economic activity and expenditure.
