Broader market indices came under heavy selling pressure on Friday, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100 declining as much as 3 percent and extending their losing streak to a seventh consecutive trading session.
The selloff remained broad based across the smallcap universe. As many as 96 of the 100 constituents of the Nifty Smallcap 100 were trading in negative territory, highlighting the intensity of the market-wide decline.
The broader indices have also continued to underperform the benchmark Nifty during the recent correction, indicating that selling pressure has been particularly pronounced outside large-cap stocks.
The sustained decline comes amid heightened caution among investors toward broader market valuations and riskier segments of the equity market.
The sharp fall across a large proportion of constituents suggests that the weakness is not limited to a handful of stocks but is being experienced across a wide section of the smallcap and midcap universe.
With the broader indices now declining for seven consecutive sessions, investors are likely to closely track market breadth, institutional flows and the ability of midcap and smallcap stocks to stabilise before assessing whether the current correction is nearing an end.
The recent performance also highlights the increasing risk in the broader market compared with large-cap equities. While the benchmark Nifty has shown greater resilience, sustained weakness in midcap and smallcap stocks could continue to weigh on overall market sentiment if selling pressure persists.
