Footwear major Bata India came under selling pressure after reporting a sharp decline in earnings for the fourth quarter of FY26, with investors reacting to the significant impact of one-time expenses and foreign exchange losses on profitability. The stock fell more than 4% in early trade, reflecting concerns over the headline earnings contraction despite continued improvement in underlying business performance.
The company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 2.2 crore for the March quarter, down 95.2% from Rs 45.9 crore in the corresponding period last year. The decline was primarily driven by exceptional costs linked to business restructuring and currency-related losses rather than a deterioration in demand conditions.
Bata India stated that its quarterly performance was affected by voluntary separation retirement (VSR) expenses amounting to Rs 28.1 crore. The initiative forms part of the company's long-term strategy aimed at improving supply chain capabilities, operational efficiency, and cost structure. In addition, the company recorded a non-cash foreign exchange loss of Rs 22.4 crore arising from the restatement of royalty-related financial liabilities amid currency depreciation and geopolitical uncertainties.
Despite the sharp fall in reported profit, revenue performance remained resilient. Revenue from operations increased 5% year-on-year to Rs 828 crore in the March quarter compared with Rs 788 crore a year earlier. The company indicated that the quarter marked its second consecutive period of accelerating revenue growth, suggesting a gradual recovery in consumer demand and improved execution across business channels.
Operational indicators also pointed towards strengthening fundamentals. Cash generated from operations rose 18.2% year-on-year to Rs 132.2 crore, reflecting healthier working capital management and stronger cash conversion. The company continued to focus on inventory optimisation, with gross inventory declining 13% during the period. Management attributed part of this improvement to tighter inventory controls and enhanced operational discipline across the network.
A key strategic initiative driving performance has been the expansion of Bata India's zero-based merchandising programme. The initiative has now been rolled out across nearly 550 stores and contributes to more than 70% of total store sales. The programme is aimed at improving product assortment, inventory productivity, and customer engagement at the store level.
The company's digital business also remained a growth driver. Bata India's e-commerce segment delivered growth in the mid-twenties, while premium brands such as Hush Puppies and Power continued to outperform the broader portfolio. This trend aligns with the company's ongoing premiumisation strategy, which seeks to improve margins and increase average selling prices through a stronger mix of premium products.
On the shareholder returns front, the board recommended a final dividend of Rs 9 per equity share for FY26, subject to shareholder approval at the annual general meeting scheduled for August 12, 2026. The total dividend payout for the year stands at Rs 115.68 crore. July 31, 2026 has been fixed as the record date, while dividend payments are expected to commence from August 27, 2026, subject to approval.
Management maintained a positive outlook on business momentum. The company's leadership highlighted that volume-led growth remained broad-based across channels and that sequential improvements were visible throughout the quarter, with March performing better than January. Management also reiterated its focus on network expansion, premiumisation, disciplined capital allocation, and execution of strategic initiatives.
From an Indian market perspective, the results reinforce a broader trend visible across discretionary consumer companies. While demand conditions are gradually improving, profitability remains vulnerable to restructuring expenses, currency fluctuations, and investments aimed at long-term growth. Investors are increasingly differentiating between temporary earnings disruptions and structural business weakness.
For the footwear and retail sector, Bata India's results indicate that premium products, digital channels, and inventory discipline continue to be important drivers of performance. Companies with strong brands and distribution networks may be better positioned to capture incremental consumer spending as economic conditions stabilise.
