Banking shares came under selling pressure on June 16 as investors booked profits following a sharp three-session advance in the sector. The Bank Nifty index edged lower during the session, ending its recent upward momentum as traders locked in gains accumulated during the rally.
The weakness was visible across several banking counters, with AU Small Finance Bank emerging among the notable decliners. Despite the decline in the benchmark banking index, broader financial services and private banking segments displayed relative resilience, with the Nifty Financial Services and Nifty Private Bank indices posting modest gains.
The profit booking follows a strong rally in banking stocks over recent sessions. Earlier, the Bank Nifty had surged nearly 3 percent, supported by gains in major lenders including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, State Bank of India and other banking constituents. Improved market sentiment, easing geopolitical concerns and softer crude oil prices had helped drive the sector higher.
Market participants are now closely monitoring key technical support and resistance levels for the banking index to assess whether the recent pullback remains a temporary consolidation or signals a deeper correction after the strong run-up.
