Angel One Client Base Grows But Trading Activity And Market Share Decline

Angel One reported strong client and funding book growth in August, but trading activity weakened with lower order volumes, average daily orders and notional turnover. The brokerage also recorded a decline in retail turnover market share across equity, futures and options and commodities.

Angel One Ltd. reported continued growth in its customer base and client funding book in August, although key trading activity metrics remained under pressure. According to an exchange filing, the company’s client base increased 17.8% year-on-year to 3.95 crore, while gross client acquisitions rose 3.8% year-on-year to 5.7 lakh during the month.


On a month-on-month basis, gross client acquisitions increased 19.9%, while the overall client base rose 1.4%. The number of registered unique mutual fund systematic investment plans also increased 2% year-on-year to 7,20,680.


Angel One’s average client funding book grew more than 40% year-on-year to Rs 7,421 crore, indicating continued expansion in the amount of funds deployed through its platform. However, trading activity was comparatively weaker, with total orders declining marginally year-on-year to 10.95 crore.


Average daily orders fell nearly 10% year-on-year to 52.1 lakh in August. On a month-on-month basis, total orders declined around 19%, while average daily orders fell approximately 11%.


The weakness was also visible in notional turnover. Angel One’s average daily turnover declined nearly 10% year-on-year to Rs 41.39 lakh crore. Average daily turnover in the futures and options segment fell 14% to Rs 38.35 lakh crore.


On the options premium turnover basis, however, the company’s average daily turnover increased more than 117% year-on-year to Rs 3.15 lakh crore. Average daily turnover in the futures and options segment stood at Rs 11,300 crore, down 10% year-on-year.


Angel One’s retail turnover market share for overall equity, based on options premium turnover, declined 127 basis points year-on-year to 19.5%. Its retail turnover market share in the futures and options segment fell 42 basis points to 21.7%.


The company also reported a sharp decline in its commodity turnover market share, which fell 2,391 basis points year-on-year to 52% in August.


Despite the mixed operating metrics, Angel One shares were trading around 5% higher at Rs 300.30 during morning trade on September 4. The stock was among the top gainers in the Nifty Capital Markets index, which was trading 1.4% higher. Other brokerage stocks, including Groww and Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers, also traded higher.
