Adani Power Partners with Druk Green Power for 570 MW Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan

Deal Type : Joint Venture (Hydropower Project)

Estimated Value : ₹6,000 Crore

Deal Status : Signed on September 05, 2025

Strategic Fit

Adani Power Ltd (APL) and Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) have formalized their partnership by signing a Shareholders Agreement (SHA) for the 570 MW Wangchhu hydroelectric project in Bhutan. The venture will strengthen cross-border energy collaboration, leveraging Bhutan’s hydropower-rich ecosystem and India’s growing demand for clean energy.

This is the first project under the MoU signed between APL and DGPC, marking a significant milestone in India–Bhutan energy cooperation.

Deal Structure
  • A joint company will be incorporated in Bhutan with DGPC holding 51% and APL holding 49%.

  • The project entails an investment of ₹6,000 crore.

  • Construction is scheduled to begin in 1H FY26 and expected to be completed in five years.

  • Power allocation strategy:

  • During winter months, electricity will primarily cater to Bhutan’s domestic demand.

  • During summer months, surplus power will be exported to India.

Competitive Landscape

This partnership reinforces India’s strategy of deepening its renewable and cross-border energy portfolio. With Bhutan already a key electricity exporter to India, the project ensures stability in supply while reducing India’s dependence on thermal sources.

Competitively, the deal positions Adani Power among the select private Indian companies with active participation in Bhutan’s hydropower sector, traditionally dominated by government-to-government projects.

Market Reaction

The announcement has been perceived as a long-term growth driver for Adani Power. While immediate financial implications may be limited given the extended construction timeline, the project strengthens APL’s clean energy pipeline and geographical diversification.

Final Word

The Adani Power–DGPC Wangchhu hydroelectric project is a strategic step toward regional energy integration and sustainability. With a balanced structure ensuring Bhutan’s energy security and India’s summer demand fulfillment, the project highlights how cross-border partnerships can drive mutual benefits in the renewable energy sector.
