Nifty Breaks Below 23,000 as Crude Surges and Global Risk-Off Sentiment Deepens

Market Wrap
Indian equity markets began the week on a distinctly weak footing, with the Nifty 50 opening lower and remaining under pressure throughout the session. The index declined 1.56% to 22,780.25, breaking below the psychologically important 23,000 mark, while the Sensex fell 1.52%.
Selling was broad-based, with all sectoral indices closing in negative territory. PSU Banks were among the biggest casualties, falling more than 3%, while the Bank Nifty declined nearly 2%. Weakness also extended to the broader market, with Midcap and Smallcap indices falling alongside a rise in India VIX, indicating increased expectations of near-term volatility.
The pressure was reinforced by a difficult global backdrop. Brent crude moved above $106 per barrel, raising concerns over imported inflation and the potential impact of higher energy costs on India's external balance and corporate margins. Elevated US Treasury yields also kept pressure on risk assets, while continued FII selling added to the domestic market's weakness.
Geopolitical uncertainty remained another key driver. Renewed concerns surrounding US-Iran developments and potential disruptions to oil supplies through the region kept crude prices elevated and encouraged a broader risk-off tone across financial markets.
What's Ahead
The immediate focus will be on whether the Nifty can stabilise after breaking below 23,000. The next session is likely to remain sensitive to external macro and geopolitical signals rather than domestic factors alone.
Key indicators to watch :
Crude oil: A sustained move above current levels could increase pressure on Indian equities, particularly rate-sensitive and oil-sensitive segments.
US Treasury yields: Further increases could weigh on global risk appetite and emerging-market flows.
FII flows: Continued foreign selling could keep the market under pressure, while a moderation in outflows may help stabilise sentiment.
Rupee: Currency weakness could add to concerns around imported inflation and capital flows.
Geopolitical developments: Any escalation around US-Iran tensions could trigger another move higher in crude; signs of de-escalation could provide relief.
Banking and leveraged sectors: Banks, realty and other rate-sensitive businesses may remain particularly sensitive to movements in yields and risk sentiment.
Bottom line : The break below 23,000 has weakened the near-term market setup, but the next direction will depend heavily on crude oil, global yields, geopolitical developments and institutional flows. A sharp one-day decline by itself does not establish the market's next move.

Technical Outlook
Nifty 50
The Nifty 50 recovered 77.40 points, or 0.34%, to close at 23,140.50 after finding buying interest following the previous session's sharp decline. The index traded between 23,020.95 and 23,162.70 and closed closer to the day's high, while market breadth remained favourable with 34 constituents advancing against 15 declining. However, the RSI remains near the 40 level, indicating that momentum is still subdued despite the day's recovery. The index has near-term support at 22,935 and 22,809, while resistance is placed at 23,346 and 23,472. A sustained move above the resistance zone would indicate improving short-term momentum, whereas a break below 22,935 could reopen downside pressure.
BankNifty
The Nifty Bank gained 141.90 points, or 0.26%, to close at 55,580.40 after recovering from its opening level and moving higher through the session. Buying in Axis Bank, AU Bank and HDFC Bank helped offset weakness in Federal Bank, IndusInd Bank and ICICI Bank. Breadth was moderately positive, with eight constituents advancing and six declining. The RSI near 40 continues to indicate subdued momentum, suggesting that the recovery has not yet translated into a strong technical reversal. Immediate support is placed at 55,088 and 54,784, while resistance stands at 56,073 and 56,377. The index would need to move above the resistance zone to strengthen the short-term technical setup, while a break below 55,088 could increase selling pressure.
NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES
FINNIFTY outperformed the broader benchmarks, rising 140.70 points, or 0.56%, to close at 25,094.85, supported by gains in MFSL, Axis Bank, REC, Bajaj Finance and HDFC Bank. Market breadth was also positive, with 12 constituents advancing against eight declining, indicating relatively broad participation in the recovery. The index remains positioned between its immediate support and resistance zones, with support at 24,816 and 24,644 and resistance at 25,373 and 25,545. Holding above the support zone would keep the recent recovery structure intact, while a sustained move through 25,373 could improve the short-term momentum; conversely, a break below 24,816 would weaken the setup.
Sensex
The Sensex advanced 315.20 points, or 0.43%, to close at 73,895.74, recovering after the previous session's decline. Axis Bank, M&M, Asian Paints and Bajaj Finance were among the key contributors, while weakness in Trent, Infosys and select banking stocks limited the broader gains. Market breadth was constructive, with 19 stocks advancing, 10 declining and one unchanged. The index has immediate support at 73,188 and 72,750, while resistance is placed at 74,604 and 75,042. The recovery keeps the index above its immediate support zone, but a sustained move above 74,604 would be required to signal stronger short-term momentum, while a break below 73,188 could bring renewed selling pressure.
