Sensex, Nifty End Lower Amid Crude Oil Surge and Fed Caution; Jio Platforms Debuts at 21% Premium

Market Wrap
Indian equity markets closed lower on Wednesday after a volatile session, as rising crude oil prices, weakness in IT stocks and caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision weighed on sentiment. The Nifty 50 declined 0.22% to 22,698.85, while the Sensex fell 352.64 points, or 0.48%, to 73,246.03. After opening with a gap down, the Nifty tested the 22,500 level before recovering most of its losses, indicating buying interest at lower levels. However, the recovery lost momentum near the previous closing zone, reflecting continued uncertainty among investors.
Sectoral performance remained mixed, with IT and Oil & Gas stocks facing selling pressure, while Auto, Pharma and select banking stocks offered support. Mid-cap and small-cap indices outperformed the benchmarks, ending higher despite weakness in large-cap equities. Meanwhile, Jio Platforms made a strong stock market debut at approximately a 21% premium to its IPO price, highlighting investor interest in select large-scale business offerings.
On the corporate earnings front, Larsen & Toubro reported a 33% year-on-year increase in Q2 FY27 net profit to ₹5,202 crore, while revenue grew 16% and quarterly order inflows advanced 28%. The performance provided a positive signal for infrastructure and capital expenditure-related businesses, although operating margin pressure highlighted the importance of earnings quality alongside headline growth.
What's Ahead
The US Federal Reserve's policy decision and forward guidance will be the key global trigger for Thursday's session. A hawkish stance could push the US dollar and bond yields higher, potentially intensifying foreign investor outflows from emerging markets. Conversely, a less restrictive outlook could support risk appetite and provide some relief to Indian equities.
Crude oil prices will remain equally important following the latest escalation in Middle East supply concerns. Brent crude near $115–116 per barrel could increase India's import bill, put additional pressure on the rupee and inflation, and squeeze margins across aviation, paints, chemicals and logistics. Investors will also monitor currency movements and FII flows for signs of changing market sentiment.

Technical Outlook
Nifty 50
The NIFTY 50 ended almost flat, declining 3.45 points to close at 22,749.75, as gains in consumer, telecom and automobile stocks offset losses in banking, metals and IT. The index traded between 22,636.85 and 22,829.75, while market breadth remained evenly balanced, with 25 stocks advancing and 25 declining. The RSI remained below 50, indicating subdued momentum and a lack of strong directional conviction amid persistent crude oil pressures and caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision. Immediate support is placed at 22,515 and 22,370, while resistance lies at 22,985 and 23,130. A sustained move above 22,985 could strengthen the recovery attempt, whereas a break below 22,515 may invite renewed selling pressure.
BankNifty
The NIFTY BANK declined 391.80 points, or 0.72%, to close at 53,974.90, as selling across major private and public sector lenders weighed on the index. After opening higher, the index faced sustained selling pressure and closed near its intraday low of 53,951.20, while market breadth remained negative, with 8 stocks declining against 6 advancing. The RSI fell below 40, reflecting persistent bearish momentum and continued weakness in the banking segment. Immediate support levels stand at 53,435 and 53,101, while resistance is positioned at 54,515 and 54,849. A sustained hold above 53,435 could help stabilize the index, but a decisive break below this level would increase the risk of further downside.
NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES
The NIFTY Financial Services index fell 150.60 points, or 0.62%, to close at 24,303.75, as weakness in banking, insurance and lending stocks outweighed gains in select financial companies. REC, SBI Cards and several major banking constituents faced selling pressure, while the market breadth remained decisively negative, with 13 stocks declining against 7 advancing. The index's performance indicates continued weakness across the broader financial services segment, with buying interest remaining selective. Immediate support is placed at 24,005 and 23,820, while resistance levels stand at 24,603 and 24,788. Holding above 24,005 could help limit further losses, whereas a decisive move below this level would reinforce the bearish outlook.
Sensex
The BSE SENSEX slipped 8.08 points, or 0.01%, to close at 73,598.67, as losses in banking, IT and select heavyweight stocks offset gains in automobile, telecom and power stocks. Bharti Airtel, Trent and Maruti supported the index, while Axis Bank, TCS and Asian Paints were among the notable laggards. Market breadth remained positive, with 17 stocks advancing against 12 declining and one unchanged, indicating some underlying resilience despite the lack of meaningful index movement. Immediate support is positioned at 72,767 and 72,253, while resistance lies at 74,430 and 74,944. Sustained movement above 74,430 could improve the near-term technical outlook, while a break below 72,767 would signal increasing downside pressure.
