Sensex, Nifty End Flat on Monthly Expiry as Crude Near $117, FII Outflows and Fed Decision Keep Investors Cautious

Market Wrap
Indian equity benchmarks ended Tuesday’s monthly derivatives expiry on a subdued note, with the Nifty 50 slipping 0.02% to close at 22,749.75, while the Sensex declined 8.08 points to 73,598.67. Both indices opened weak, recovered during the first half, and then surrendered their gains following a sharp mid-session correction before staging a late recovery. The largely unchanged closing levels reflected cautious positioning as investors assessed global uncertainty, elevated crude oil prices and persistent foreign institutional selling.
Broader markets showed greater resilience, with small-cap and mid-cap indices gaining approximately 2.7% and 1%, respectively. Healthcare and pharmaceutical stocks rebounded, while IT and financial stocks remained under pressure. Selective buying in broader-market stocks helped offset weakness in key heavyweight segments, although the benchmarks failed to establish a clear directional trend.
Global cues remained mixed. Asian markets traded largely higher, supported by AI-related buying, while European equities weakened and US futures remained subdued ahead of major central-bank decisions and technology earnings. Brent crude hovering around $115–117 per barrel remained a significant concern amid Middle East tensions, raising the risk of higher import costs, inflationary pressure, rupee weakness and margin compression for Indian companies.
What's Ahead
Indian equities are likely to remain volatile on Wednesday, with the Nifty's ability to sustain the 22,700–22,750 zone emerging as an important near-term indicator. Immediate resistance around 22,820 will be crucial; a sustained breakout could improve recovery prospects, while renewed weakness below recent support levels may revive selling pressure.
The key global trigger will be the US Federal Reserve's policy decision, scheduled for late Wednesday night in India. Investors will focus not only on the rate decision but also on the Fed's guidance on inflation and future monetary policy. A hawkish outlook could strengthen the dollar, push bond yields higher and intensify pressure on emerging-market equities.

Technical Outlook
Nifty 50
The NIFTY 50 advanced 153.20 points, or 0.68%, to close at 22,753.20, recovering from the previous session's decline as broad-based buying and gains in metal and pharmaceutical stocks supported the benchmark. The index opened at 22,524.40, touched an intraday low of 22,387.35 and closed at its session high, indicating sustained buying interest towards the close. Market breadth remained firmly positive, with 37 stocks advancing against 13 declining, while the RSI moving towards 50 suggests a gradual improvement in momentum. Immediate support is placed at 22,518 and 22,373, while resistance lies at 22,988 and 23,133. Sustaining above 22,518 could help extend the recovery towards the first resistance zone, whereas a break below 22,373 may revive selling pressure.
BankNifty
The NIFTY BANK edged higher by 79.35 points, or 0.15%, to close at 54,366.70, as gains in select banking stocks offset weakness in a few heavyweight lenders. The index recovered from its intraday low of 53,777.50 and finished near the session high, suggesting some improvement in buying interest towards the close. Market breadth was positive, with 11 constituents advancing against 3 declining; however, the RSI moving towards 40 indicates that momentum remains relatively weak. Immediate support is positioned at 53,827 and 53,493, while resistance stands at 54,907 and 55,241. A sustained move above 54,907 could strengthen the recovery attempt, while a decline below 53,827 would increase the risk of renewed downside pressure.
NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES
The NIFTY Financial Services index gained 51.35 points, or 0.21%, to close at 24,454.35, as advances in exchange and banking stocks offset losses across NBFCs and insurance counters. Market breadth remained favourable, with 13 stocks advancing against 7 declining, although the modest gain indicates that buying interest was selective rather than broad-based across all financial constituents. The index has immediate support at 24,155 and 23,970, while resistance is placed at 24,753 and 24,939. Holding above 24,155 could help maintain the current recovery attempt, while a sustained breakout above 24,753 would improve the near-term technical outlook. Conversely, a break below 23,970 could reinforce the bearish bias.
Sensex
The BSE SENSEX rallied 482.92 points, or 0.66%, to close at 73,606.75, supported by widespread buying across heavyweight stocks in several sectors. Market participation was strong, with 23 stocks advancing, 5 declining and 2 remaining unchanged, reflecting an improvement in overall sentiment. Gains in Adani Ports, Eternal, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Trent contributed to the advance, although weakness in Bajaj Finance and HDFC Bank limited some upside. Immediate support is placed at 72,776 and 72,261, while resistance lies at 74,438 and 74,952. Holding above 72,776 could sustain the recovery, while a decisive move above 74,438 would strengthen bullish momentum. A break below the first support, however, could expose the index to renewed selling pressure.
