Sensex, Nifty Rebound After Four-Day Losing Streak as Metal and Pharma Stocks Rally; Crude Near $115 Keeps Risks Elevated

Market Wrap

Indian equity markets staged a strong recovery on Monday, snapping a four-session losing streak as value buying in beaten-down stocks and gains across metals, pharmaceuticals and select heavyweight shares lifted investor sentiment. The Sensex rose 482.92 points, or 0.66%, to close at 73,606.75, while the Nifty 50 gained 153.20 points, or 0.68%, to settle at 22,753.20. Both benchmarks recovered sharply from their intraday lows, indicating renewed buying interest at lower levels.

Sectorally, metals and pharmaceuticals led the rebound, with the Nifty Metal index advancing 2.21% and the Pharma index gaining 1.76%. Mid-cap and small-cap stocks also recovered, reflecting broader participation in the relief rally. Strong quarterly results from companies including JSW Steel, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Kotak Mahindra Bank supported stock-specific buying, although investors remained selective amid an uncertain macroeconomic environment.

Despite the recovery, elevated crude oil prices near $115 per barrel and rupee weakness around 95.19 against the US dollar continued to pose significant risks. High energy costs could intensify inflationary pressures, squeeze corporate margins and complicate the interest-rate outlook. Geopolitical uncertainty and persistent foreign investor outflows also remain concerns, potentially limiting the durability of the rebound.

What's Ahead

Indian equities may attempt to extend Monday’s recovery on Tuesday, October 27, although volatility is likely to remain elevated. The Nifty’s ability to sustain above the 22,700–22,750 zone will be important for near-term sentiment, while the 22,800–22,850 range represents an immediate hurdle. These levels are indicative technical reference points, and the direction of the market will also depend on global cues and institutional flows.

The domestic focus will remain on the September-quarter earnings season, with results from Larsen & Toubro, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Steel, Bajaj Auto, Cipla and SBI Life Insurance among the key developments to watch. Investors will assess revenue growth, margins, demand conditions and management guidance for signs of earnings resilience amid elevated input costs.
