Market outlook for 24 September 2026

Nifty Rebounds Above 23,400 as Metals Rally; Crude Below $100 Eases Pressure on Indian Equities

Market Wrap

Indian equities recovered on Wednesday as investors stepped in at lower levels, helping the Nifty 50 gain 0.50% and close at 23,446.80. The broader market also participated in the rebound, with the Midcap and Smallcap indices rising around 0.7% and 0.9%, respectively, indicating improved risk appetite beyond large-cap stocks.

Metals emerged as the standout sector, with the Nifty Metal index surging 2.4%, supported by strong buying in Tata Steel and Hindalco. Realty, FMCG and PSU banks also advanced, while IT stocks remained under pressure.

Sentiment was further supported by Brent crude falling below $100 a barrel, alongside hopes of some de-escalation in West Asia. Lower oil prices are particularly relevant for India given its dependence on crude imports and their implications for inflation, the current account and corporate costs.

Despite the recovery, the broader global backdrop remains uncertain. Investors continue to assess the implications of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s recent rate hike, persistent inflationary pressures and developments in West Asia.

What's Ahead

The immediate focus for the September 24 session will be whether the Nifty can sustain above the 23,400 zone after reclaiming this level. Metals will remain in focus following their strong performance, while other sectors that showed relative strength could also attract attention.

On the domestic macro front, RBI liquidity management will remain important. The central bank has been absorbing surplus liquidity through VRRR operations and has announced a ₹25,000-crore OMO bond sale for September 28, which could influence liquidity conditions and bond yields.

Technical Outlook

Nifty 50

The NIFTY 50 closed at 23,329, down 0.36%, reversing the previous session’s gains amid broad-based selling and weak market breadth, with 35 of 50 constituents declining. The index traded between 23,285.75 and 23,489.00 and failed to sustain its opening strength. The RSI slipped below 40, signalling weakening near-term momentum and increasing selling pressure. The index now has immediate support at 23,114, followed by 22,982, while resistance is placed at 23,544 and 23,676. A sustained move above 23,544 could help stabilize the near-term setup, while a break below 23,114 would increase downside pressure.

BankNifty

The NIFTY Bank declined 0.45% to 56,215.55 as broad-based weakness across banking stocks weighed on the index, with 12 of 14 constituents ending lower. After opening at 56,489.90 and initially moving higher, the index reversed and closed near the lower end of the day’s range, reflecting fading buying momentum. The RSI moved towards the 40 level, indicating weakening momentum. Immediate support is placed at 55,731, followed by 55,431, while resistance is at 56,700 and 57,000. Sustaining above 56,700 would be important for a recovery, whereas a break below 55,731 could extend the corrective move.

NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES

The NIFTY Financial Services index fell 0.42% to 25,417.95, with 16 of 20 constituents declining, highlighting broad-based weakness across the financial segment. The index remains below its immediate resistance zone despite selective strength in BSE, Jio Financial Services and PFC. Near-term support is placed at 25,154, followed by 24,991, while resistance stands at 25,682 and 25,845. The current setup suggests a cautious tone, with a sustained move above 25,682 required to improve the short-term momentum, while a break below 25,154 could expose the index to further downside.

Sensex

The BSE Sensex declined 329.91 points, or 0.44%, to close at 74,529.08, reversing the previous session’s gains as selling in several heavyweight stocks outweighed gains in select constituents. The index traded between 74,435 and 74,906 during the session, while market breadth remained weak with 23 of 30 stocks declining. Near-term support is placed at 73,834, followed by 73,405, while resistance is positioned at 75,224 and 75,653. The immediate technical setup remains cautious, with a sustained recovery above 75,224 needed to strengthen the short-term outlook, while a break below 73,834 could intensify selling pressure.
