Indian Markets Tumble Over 1% Amid Global Sell-Off; Pharma Stocks Offer Defensive Support

Market Wrap
Indian equity markets ended sharply lower on 24 June as weak global cues and broad-based profit booking triggered widespread selling across sectors. The Nifty 50 remained under pressure throughout the session and settled near the 23,800 mark, declining more than 1.15%.
Investor sentiment remained fragile amid rising concerns over global economic growth, trade-related uncertainties, and fluctuating foreign fund flows. The weakness was in line with negative trends across global markets, following a soft close on Wall Street and steep losses in several Asian indices, including a near 10% decline in South Korea’s KOSPI.
Despite the broader market weakness, Pharma and Healthcare stocks emerged as notable outperformers, attracting defensive buying interest and limiting deeper losses in the benchmark indices.
What's Ahead
Market participants are expected to remain focused on global developments, including central bank commentary, inflation readings, and upcoming corporate earnings announcements. Investor attention will also remain on foreign institutional investor activity and the stability of global equity markets.
While near-term volatility could persist, defensive sectors such as Pharma and Healthcare may continue to witness relative strength if risk appetite remains subdued. A meaningful recovery in domestic equities will likely depend on an improvement in global sentiment and renewed participation from institutional investors.
