Market outlook for 24 August 2026
Indian Equities Extend Weekly Decline as Crude, Bond Yields and Iran Tensions Weigh on Sentiment

Market Wrap
Indian equities remained under pressure during the week, with the Nifty 50 declining 0.47% to 24,252 and extending its losing streak to four consecutive weeks. The index traded within a narrow 24,025–24,360 range but failed to sustain recovery attempts, with Friday’s close near the lower end of the range highlighting continued selling pressure.
The weakness was more visible across the broader market, with midcaps and smallcaps remaining under pressure. Metal stocks were a notable exception, gaining nearly 1% and showing relative resilience. The cautious domestic setup was mirrored by mixed global cues, as Asian markets remained largely subdued while European equities struggled to build meaningful momentum.
Investor sentiment was further affected by rising crude oil prices and higher global bond yields. Both factors remain important for emerging markets, as elevated energy costs can worsen inflation and external-balance concerns while higher U.S. yields can make emerging-market assets relatively less attractive and weigh on foreign portfolio flows.
Geopolitical risks have also returned to the forefront. The U.S. is preparing additional sanctions on Iran, while uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz continues to raise concerns over global energy supplies. Any further escalation could keep crude prices elevated and add another layer of volatility to risk assets.
What's Ahead
The Nifty is likely to remain range-bound in the near term, with 24,350–24,400 emerging as the key resistance zone. A decisive move above this area could improve sentiment and open the door for a broader recovery. On the downside, 24,200–24,150 remains an important support zone, and a sustained break below it could intensify selling pressure.
Markets will closely track U.S. bond yields, crude oil prices, FII flows and developments around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. Domestic investors will also focus on India's upcoming July IIP and Q1 FY27 GDP data, which could provide fresh signals on the strength of economic activity.
The August F&O expiry and the upcoming U.S. GDP revision could add to market volatility. With midcaps and smallcaps already showing signs of weakness, a durable recovery will likely require renewed participation from large-cap stocks alongside stabilization in the broader market.
Overall, the near-term setup remains cautious. The market has room for a technical rebound, but a stronger recovery is likely to depend on easing global yield and crude pressures, stable foreign flows and the absence of further escalation in geopolitical risks.

Technical Outlook
Nifty 50
The NIFTY 50 closed marginally higher at 24,252, gaining 20.15 points or 0.08%, but the near-term technical setup remains largely neutral. The index traded in a narrow range between 24,206.80 and 24,284.05 and ended close to the middle of the session range, reflecting a lack of decisive buying momentum. The RSI remains around the 50 level, indicating balanced momentum with neither bulls nor bears holding a clear technical advantage. Immediate support is placed at 24,092, followed by 23,993, while resistance is seen at 24,412 and 24,511. A sustained move above 24,412 could strengthen the recovery attempt, whereas a break below 24,092 may increase downside pressure.
BankNifty
The NIFTY BANK outperformed the broader market, rising 266.05 points or 0.46% to close at 57,761.95. The index remained firm throughout the session after opening at 57,613.20 and moved close to its intraday high of 57,772.45, suggesting sustained buying interest across banking stocks. The RSI has moved above the 50 level, pointing to improving positive momentum. Near-term support is placed at 57,508, followed by 57,351, while resistance is seen at 58,016 and 58,173. A decisive breakout above 58,016 could strengthen the bullish setup, while a move below 57,508 would weaken the near-term momentum.
NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES
FINNIFTY gained 57.10 points or 0.22% to close at 26,261, supported by strength in insurance, banking and selected financial stocks. The positive breadth, with 11 constituents advancing against 8 declining, indicates moderately constructive participation, although the gains remained limited. The index is currently positioned between support at 26,024 and 25,877 and resistance at 26,498 and 26,645. A sustained move above 26,498 would improve the short-term technical outlook and potentially extend the recovery, while a break below 26,024 could bring the lower support levels back into focus.
Sensex
The BSE SENSEX ended almost unchanged at 77,540.83, gaining just 3.11 points, as gains in power and financial stocks were offset by weakness in autos, IT and consumer names. The index remained technically subdued, with negative breadth as 16 stocks declined against 13 advances, suggesting limited underlying participation despite the flat headline close. Immediate support is placed at 76,993, followed by 76,654, while resistance is seen at 78,088 and 78,427. The index would need to reclaim and sustain levels above 78,088 to improve the near-term technical structure, whereas a break below 76,993 could increase selling pressure.
