Nifty Reverses After 127-Point Gap-Up to Close Lower; Midcaps and Smallcaps Slide as Crude Nears $110

Market Wrap

Indian equity markets witnessed a sharp intraday reversal on Wednesday as early optimism faded and selling pressure dragged benchmark indices lower. The Nifty 50 opened with a 127-point gap-up at 23,016, climbed to an intraday high near 23,120, but failed to sustain its gains and eventually closed 0.34% lower at 22,811.35. The Sensex declined 143 points to settle at 73,709.69. The weakness was more pronounced in the broader market, with midcap and smallcap indices falling approximately 1.6% and 2.4%, respectively, highlighting the extent of selling beyond frontline stocks.

The IT sector outperformed, supported by renewed global optimism around artificial intelligence and earnings-related buying. Strong results from Super Micro Computer and positive developments surrounding SpaceX lifted sentiment toward technology stocks. However, financials, metals, automobiles and other cyclical sectors remained under pressure. The failure of benchmark indices to sustain their gap-up opening suggests that investors continue to use rallies to reduce exposure amid an uncertain macroeconomic environment.

Crude oil remained a major concern, with Brent hovering around $109–110 per barrel. Sustained elevated prices could increase India's import bill, put pressure on the rupee, complicate the inflation outlook and squeeze corporate margins, particularly across oil-sensitive sectors.

What's Ahead

Indian equities are likely to remain volatile on Thursday, with the Nifty's inability to sustain its gap-up opening keeping the near-term outlook cautious to bearish. The immediate support zone is placed at 22,560–22,660. A decisive break below this range could intensify selling pressure and expose the index to further downside. On the upside, 22,880–22,940 represents the first resistance zone, followed by the psychologically important 23,000 mark. A sustained move above 23,000 would be necessary to improve the near-term technical outlook, while failure to reclaim the initial resistance zone could trigger renewed selling on recovery attempts.

The broader market warrants particular attention after the sharp declines in midcaps and smallcaps. Continued profit booking in stocks with elevated valuations or uncertain earnings prospects could keep market participation weak, even if select heavyweight stocks remain resilient. IT stocks may continue to attract buying interest if global AI sentiment remains supportive, although sustained sectoral strength will depend on earnings performance and forward guidance.

Technical Outlook

Nifty 50

The NIFTY 50 declined 257.20 points, or 1.11%, to close at 22,888.95, as sustained selling in heavyweight banking, financial and IT stocks dragged the benchmark lower. The index opened at 23,150.85 and slipped to an intraday low of 22,845, closing near the lower end of its trading range. Market breadth was decisively negative, with 41 stocks declining against just 9 advancing, while losses in Axis Bank, Infosys and Bajaj Finance intensified the pressure. The RSI fell below 50, indicating a shift towards bearish momentum following the recent rally. Immediate support is placed at 22,654 and 22,509, while resistance lies at 23,124 and 23,269. A sustained move above 23,124 could help stabilize sentiment, whereas a decisive break below 22,654 may expose the index to further downside.

BankNifty

The NIFTY BANK lost 355.90 points, or 0.64%, to settle at 55,488.10, as weakness in major private-sector lenders outweighed strong buying in public-sector banking stocks. The index opened at 55,827.45, touched a high of 55,883.70 and subsequently declined to an intraday low of 55,331.10, reflecting persistent selling pressure. Axis Bank's sharp fall following its Q2 FY27 earnings miss weighed on the index, while Union Bank, PNB and Bank of Baroda recorded notable gains. Market breadth remained negative, with 8 constituents declining against 6 advancing. The RSI approached the 50 level from below, suggesting that bearish momentum remains a concern. Immediate support is positioned at 54,950 and 54,617, while resistance stands at 56,026 and 56,359. Holding above 54,950 could help the index consolidate, but a break below this level would increase downside risks.

NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES

The NIFTY Financial Services index declined 400 points, or 1.58%, to close at 24,987.10, recording the sharpest percentage fall among the three Nifty indices covered. Broad-based selling across banks, NBFCs and insurance stocks weighed on performance, with Axis Bank, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank and ICICI General Insurance among the notable laggards. Market breadth was particularly weak, with 18 constituents declining against just 2 advancing, indicating widespread selling pressure across the financial services segment. Immediate support is placed at 24,734 and 24,578, while resistance levels stand at 25,240 and 25,396. The near-term outlook remains cautious, with the index needing to hold above 24,734 to limit further weakness. A sustained recovery above 25,240 would be required to signal improving momentum, while a decisive breakdown below support could extend the correction.

Sensex

The BSE SENSEX dropped 876.37 points, or 1.17%, to close at 73,852.90, reflecting broad-based weakness among large-cap stocks. Selling in banking, IT, financial services and consumer stocks weighed heavily on the benchmark, with Axis Bank, UltraTech Cement, Infosys and Bajaj Finance among the major laggards. Market breadth remained decisively negative, with 25 stocks declining against only 5 advancing, while gains in SBI, Adani Ports and Larsen & Toubro provided limited support. The index's sharp decline highlights renewed selling pressure following the recent rally. Immediate support is placed at 73,013 and 72,494, while resistance lies at 74,692 and 75,212. Holding above 73,013 could allow some consolidation, but a decisive break below this level would increase the risk of further downside. A sustained move above 74,692 would be necessary to improve the short-term technical outlook.
