Market outlook for 22 July 2026

Markets Extend Losses as Weak Earnings Sentiment Keeps Nifty Below 24,200; Chemical Stocks Continue to Shine

Market Wrap

Indian equity markets traded with a negative bias on 22 July as benchmark indices failed to sustain an early recovery and ended the session in the red. After opening on a flat-to-negative note, the Nifty briefly rebounded after finding support near its 100-day exponential moving average (EMA), which also coincided with the previous session's low. However, the recovery lacked follow-through buying, and the index eventually settled below the 24,200 level, closing 0.21 percent lower.

Market sentiment remained cautious as investors avoided aggressive positioning ahead of several key domestic and global events. Stock-specific action dominated trading, with the ongoing first-quarter earnings season continuing to drive individual counters. Investors closely monitored corporate management commentary on demand trends, margins, and future growth prospects for signs of the broader economic outlook.

Among sectors, chemical stocks remained the standout performers, extending gains for the second consecutive session after a recent technical breakout. The sectoral index advanced more than 1.5 percent, reflecting sustained buying interest despite weakness in the broader market.

Global cues remained mixed. U.S. markets ended largely subdued, while Asian and European markets traded in positive territory amid optimism surrounding corporate earnings and expectations of easing trade-related uncertainties. Meanwhile, investors also remained focused on developments in U.S. trade policy and the upcoming Federal Reserve policy meeting, both of which could influence global liquidity and investor risk appetite.

What's Ahead

Markets are expected to remain volatile in the coming sessions as investors assess another round of quarterly earnings from major companies alongside key global macroeconomic developments. Corporate results and management guidance are likely to remain the primary drivers of stock-specific performance.

Globally, market participants will continue to watch developments in U.S. trade policy and expectations surrounding the upcoming Federal Reserve policy meeting for clues on interest rate direction and global capital flows. On the domestic front, sustained institutional buying and earnings that exceed market expectations could support selective sectors. However, if benchmark indices continue to trade below important technical support levels, overall market sentiment may remain cautious in the near term.

Technical Outlook

Nifty 50

Nifty remained in a consolidation phase after ending the session at 24,187, down 0.21%, while forming a small-bodied Doji-like candlestick that reflects indecision and cautious market participation. The index found buying support near its previous day's low and the 100-day EMA, indicating that bulls continue to defend lower levels despite the absence of strong directional triggers. Technically, the broader trend remains Sideways to Bullish as long as Nifty sustains above the 24,050–24,100 support zone. On the upside, immediate resistance is placed at 24,300–24,350, and a sustained breakout above this range could trigger fresh buying momentum and strengthen the short-term trend. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands at 54.05, suggesting improving momentum while remaining comfortably above the neutral level. For the next session, Nifty is expected to trade within the 24,050–24,350 range, with traders closely watching these levels for the next directional move.

BankNifty

Bank Nifty ended the session at 57,835, down 0.19%, after another range-bound trading day that reflected continued consolidation following the recent decline. The index formed a Gravestone Doji candlestick on the daily chart, highlighting indecision while continuing to hold above its key support levels. Technically, the overall outlook remains Sideways to Bullish as long as the index sustains above the 57,450–57,500 support zone. Immediate resistance is placed at 58,200–58,250, and a decisive breakout above this range could revive bullish momentum in the banking pack. The RSI is positioned at 53.96, indicating neutral-to-positive momentum with room for further upside if buying interest strengthens. Until a clear breakout or breakdown emerges, Bank Nifty is expected to remain within the 57,450–58,250 trading range, with stock-specific action likely to dominate.

Sensex

The BSE Sensex closed at 77,470.11, declining 238.41 points (0.31%), as weakness in heavyweight banking stocks and elevated crude oil prices kept investors cautious despite resilience in the broader market. Technically, the index continues to trade within a broader consolidation range after its recent rally, suggesting that profit booking and external macro uncertainties are limiting fresh upside momentum. Immediate support is placed at 77,100–77,200, while the 77,800–77,900 zone remains the key resistance area. A sustained move above resistance could attract fresh buying interest and resume the broader uptrend, whereas a break below support may lead to an extension of the ongoing consolidation. With strength continuing in the midcap and small-cap segments, the broader market structure remains constructive, and the overall outlook for Sensex stays Sideways to Bullish within the 77,100–77,900 range as investors monitor earnings, crude oil prices, and global developments for the next directional trigger.
