Indian Markets Face Fresh Selling Pressure as Brent Crude Nears $110; FII Outflows and Earnings Concerns Weigh on Sentiment

Market Wrap
Indian equity markets face a cautious start on Wednesday after the previous session's sharp sell-off erased much of the recent recovery. On Monday, the Nifty 50 declined 257.20 points, or 1.11%, to close at 22,888.95, while the Sensex fell 876.37 points to 73,852.90. Weakness across private banking, IT and financial stocks dragged the benchmarks lower as investors reassessed the impact of elevated crude oil prices, persistent foreign investor selling and emerging concerns over corporate profitability.
The biggest macroeconomic concern remains Brent crude trading around $110 per barrel, raising the risk of imported inflation, higher operating costs and pressure on corporate margins. Sustained energy prices could also widen India's import bill and weigh on the rupee, complicating the outlook for domestic financial conditions. Aviation, paints, chemicals and other fuel-intensive industries remain particularly vulnerable, while upstream oil producers could receive relative support from elevated crude prices.
Foreign institutional investor outflows continue to weigh on sentiment, although domestic institutional buying has provided some cushion. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's recent remarks about excess market liquidity and the ease with which foreign investors can exit their positions have also brought attention to the structural challenges facing Indian equities. Nevertheless, the government has maintained that India's underlying economic fundamentals remain sound.
What's Ahead
The 22,850–22,800 zone will be the immediate support area for the Nifty, followed by 22,700. A sustained break below 22,850 could intensify selling pressure, while a recovery above 23,000–23,050 would offer an early indication of improving sentiment. The stronger hurdle remains near 23,150, where the index would need sustained buying participation to establish a more convincing recovery.
Investors will closely monitor Brent crude prices, developments in the Middle East, overnight US market performance, Treasury yields, the rupee and FII–DII activity. The ongoing Q2 earnings season will also remain important, with management commentary on demand, margins, borrowing costs and future growth likely to influence stock-specific movements.

Technical Outlook
Nifty 50
The NIFTY 50 declined 257.20 points, or 1.11%, to close at 22,888.95, as sustained selling across heavyweight banking, IT and financial stocks dragged the benchmark lower. The index opened at 23,150.85, touched an intraday low of 22,845 and failed to recover meaningfully, reflecting continued selling pressure and profit-booking following the previous week's rally. Market breadth was decisively negative, with 41 stocks declining against just 9 advancing, while the RSI fell below 50, signalling a shift towards bearish momentum. Immediate support is placed at 22,654 and 22,509, while resistance lies at 23,124 and 23,269. A sustained move below 22,654 could extend the correction towards the next support, whereas a recovery above 23,124 would be necessary to improve the near-term technical outlook.
BankNifty
The NIFTY BANK fell 355.90 points, or 0.64%, to close at 55,488.10, as weakness in major private-sector lenders outweighed strong gains in public-sector banking stocks. The index opened lower, slipped to an intraday low of 55,331.10 and remained under pressure through the session. Axis Bank's sharp decline following its Q2 FY27 earnings miss added to the weakness, while Union Bank, Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda provided some support. Market breadth remained negative, with 8 constituents declining against 6 advancing, and the RSI approaching 50 from below indicated that bearish momentum remains a concern. Immediate support is placed at 54,950 and 54,617, while resistance stands at 56,026 and 56,359. Holding above 54,950 could help stabilise the index, but a decisive break below this level would increase downside risks.
NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES
The NIFTY Financial Services index declined 400 points, or 1.58%, to close at 24,987.10, recording the sharpest percentage fall among the three Nifty indices covered. Broad-based selling across banks, NBFCs and insurance stocks weighed on the index, with Axis Bank, Bajaj Finance and HDFC Bank among the major laggards. Market breadth was particularly weak, with 18 stocks declining against only 2 advancing, highlighting the extent of selling pressure across the financial services segment. Immediate support is positioned at 24,734 and 24,578, while resistance lies at 25,240 and 25,396. The index's ability to hold above 24,734 will be important for near-term stabilisation, while a decisive break below this level could trigger further weakness. A sustained recovery above 25,240 would be needed to improve the short-term outlook.
Sensex
The BSE SENSEX dropped 876.37 points, or 1.17%, to close at 73,852.90, reflecting widespread weakness among large-cap stocks. Selling in Axis Bank, UltraTech Cement, Infosys, Bajaj Finance and Trent weighed heavily on the benchmark, while gains in SBI, Adani Ports and Larsen & Toubro offered only limited support. Market breadth remained decisively negative, with 25 stocks declining against just 5 advancing, indicating broad-based selling pressure. Immediate support is placed at 73,013 and 72,494, while resistance stands at 74,692 and 75,212. Holding above 73,013 could provide a base for a technical rebound, but a decisive break below this level would expose the index to further downside towards 72,494. On the upside, a sustained move above 74,692 would be necessary to signal improving momentum.
