Nifty Ends Flat as Early Gains Fade Amid Profit Booking; Consumer Durables Continue to Outperform

Market Wrap
Indian equity markets witnessed another subdued trading session on 17 July, with the Nifty once again failing to sustain its early momentum. The benchmark opened higher and briefly approached the week's high before profit booking in the second half erased the gains, dragging the index below its intraday highs. Despite a late recovery, the Nifty closed almost unchanged around the 24,072 mark, indicating that investors remain hesitant to take aggressive positions.
Market breadth continued to remain weak as broader markets underperformed the frontline indices. Consumer Durable stocks emerged as the strongest sector for the fourth consecutive session, supported by continued buying interest in consumption-oriented businesses, while participation across several other sectors remained selective.
Global cues offered little support to domestic markets. Although Wall Street closed higher overnight, most Asian and European indices traded in negative territory as investors remained concerned about global growth prospects, trade-related uncertainties, and the outlook for interest rates. Domestically, the ongoing corporate earnings season remained the primary driver of stock-specific action, with investors rewarding companies reporting resilient earnings and constructive management guidance while penalising weaker-than-expected results.
What's Ahead
Markets are likely to remain stock-specific in the coming sessions as the earnings season gathers momentum. Investors will closely monitor quarterly results and management commentary for signals on demand trends, margins, and future growth prospects.
Global developments, including foreign institutional investor activity, inflation data, expectations around major central bank policy decisions, and broader risk sentiment, will continue to influence market direction. Until stronger domestic or global triggers emerge, the market may continue to witness range-bound trading with heightened volatility around earnings announcements.

Technical Outlook
Nifty 50
Nifty 50 continues to trade in a consolidation phase after ending nearly flat at 24,072.75, as repeated profit booking near higher levels offset buying interest around the 24,000 zone. Technically, the index remains above its short-term moving averages, indicating that the broader recovery trend is still intact despite the absence of strong follow-through buying. Momentum indicators continue to favour the bulls, with the RSI at 52.15 holding above the neutral 50 mark and MACD remaining in positive territory, although the flattening histogram suggests that bullish momentum has moderated. Derivatives data also reflects a mildly positive undertone, with a PCR of 1.07 and significant Put Open Interest around 24,000–24,100, reinforcing this zone as immediate support, while heavy Call writing at 24,100–24,200 continues to cap the upside. As long as Nifty holds above 23,900–23,950, the broader bias remains positive, while a decisive breakout above 24,250–24,300 could trigger fresh bullish momentum in the coming sessions.
Bank Nifty
Bank Nifty ended lower at 57,582.25 after another range-bound session, reflecting continued consolidation following its recent recovery. The index formed a small bearish candlestick, signalling indecision, but continues to trade above its key medium-term moving averages, suggesting that the broader trend remains positive despite weakening short-term momentum. Selling pressure at higher levels and subdued participation from private banks kept gains in check, although resilience in select PSU banking stocks helped limit the downside. Immediate support is placed at 57,000–57,200, where buying interest is expected to emerge, while 57,900–58,000 remains the immediate resistance zone. A sustained move above this hurdle could revive bullish momentum, whereas a breach below support may invite fresh corrective pressure. Until a decisive breakout occurs, Bank Nifty is likely to remain range-bound with a cautious positive bias, favouring a buy-on-dips strategy.
Sensex
The BSE Sensex continues to witness sideways consolidation after closing almost unchanged at 77,186.87, as persistent selling near its 100-Day EMA continues to restrict upside momentum. However, the index remains comfortably above its 20-Day and 50-Day EMAs, indicating that the broader short-term trend remains constructive despite the ongoing consolidation. The RSI at 53.05 remains above the neutral mark, suggesting balanced momentum with a slight positive bias. Immediate support is placed at 76,500–76,800, while 77,600–77,800 remains the key resistance zone that needs to be crossed to revive fresh buying interest. Until either of these levels is decisively breached, Sensex is expected to trade within a broad range with stock-specific action dominating the market, while investors continue to focus on fundamentally strong stocks and sectors demonstrating relative strength.
