Nifty Surges 1.66% to Reclaim 23,000 Zone as Banking Stocks Lead Recovery; Global Tech Sell-Off Keeps Risks Elevated

Market Wrap

Indian equity markets staged a strong recovery in the latest session, with the Nifty 50 rising 1.66% to close near 22,997, reclaiming its 20-day DEMA and breaking above its short-term resistance zone. After a muted opening, sustained buying lifted benchmark indices, with private-sector banks emerging as the primary drivers of the rally. A brief period of consolidation during the session was followed by renewed buying, although mild profit booking toward the close trimmed some gains. The rebound has improved the short-term technical outlook, but the ability to sustain these gains will remain critical.

The domestic recovery contrasted with weakness across global markets, where the unwinding of AI-related trades triggered sharp declines in several Asian markets, with some reportedly falling more than 5%. Volatility in technology and semiconductor stocks has raised concerns about global risk appetite, creating an uncertain backdrop for emerging-market equities.

Domestic sentiment received support from easing crude oil prices, a relatively stronger rupee and optimism surrounding a potential India–US trade agreement. However, foreign investor selling remained a concern, with FPIs reportedly recording net outflows of approximately ₹5,285 crore on October 15, despite continued support from domestic institutional investors.

What's Ahead

The Nifty's ability to sustain levels around 23,000 will be the key near-term indicator on Friday. A sustained move above this psychological threshold could extend the recovery, while failure to hold the breakout zone may lead to consolidation or renewed profit booking.

Globally, investors will assess the implications of US consumer inflation accelerating to 3.7% year-on-year in September, above expectations. Persistent inflation could reinforce concerns about a tighter Federal Reserve policy stance, potentially keeping bond yields elevated and limiting foreign investment flows into emerging markets. The continuing sell-off in AI-linked and semiconductor stocks across Asia will also remain important for technology-sector sentiment.

Technical Outlook

Nifty 50

The NIFTY 50 declined 99.25 points, or 0.44%, to close at 22,622.70, as profit-booking following the previous session's rally and weakness in heavyweight financial and automobile stocks weighed on sentiment. The index traded between 22,558.95 and 22,757.95 before settling below its opening level, while market breadth remained negative, with 34 stocks declining against 16 advancing. The RSI moved towards 40, indicating weakening momentum and a cautious near-term technical setup. Rising crude oil prices and elevated US bond yields could continue to limit recovery attempts. Immediate support is placed at 22,363 and 22,202, while resistance lies at 22,883 and 23,044. A sustained move above 22,883 could help restore bullish momentum, whereas a break below 22,363 may expose the index to further downside.

BankNifty

The NIFTY BANK slipped 165.05 points, or 0.30%, to close at 55,316.00, as losses in major banking constituents outweighed gains in select public-sector lenders. The index opened lower, moved between 55,168.20 and 55,644.70, and closed below its opening level, reflecting persistent selling pressure. Market breadth was slightly negative, with 8 stocks declining against 6 advancing, while the RSI fell below 50, suggesting a shift towards weaker momentum. Immediate support is positioned at 54,813 and 54,501, while resistance stands at 55,819 and 56,131. Holding above 54,813 could help stabilize the index, but a decisive break below this level would increase downside risks. A sustained recovery above 55,819 would be needed to improve the short-term technical outlook.

NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES

The NIFTY Financial Services index declined 279.85 points, or 1.11%, to close at 24,948.70, recording the steepest fall among the four benchmark indices. Broad-based selling across lending, insurance and other financial stocks weighed on performance, with 16 constituents declining against just 4 advancing. Sharp losses in LIC Housing Finance, Shriram Finance, Cholamandalam Investment and Bajaj Finance highlighted the extent of weakness across the segment. Immediate support is placed at 24,734 and 24,601, while resistance is positioned at 25,164 and 25,297. The negative market breadth suggests that recovery attempts may face selling pressure unless participation improves. A sustained move above 25,164 could indicate stabilization, whereas a break below 24,734 would reinforce the bearish bias.

Sensex

The BSE SENSEX declined 251.89 points, or 0.34%, to close at 72,781.89, as weakness in financial and automobile stocks offset gains in IT heavyweights. Infosys, Tech Mahindra and TCS provided support, but losses in Bajaj Finance, M&M and other major constituents kept the index in negative territory. Market breadth remained subdued, with 19 stocks declining against 11 advancing, indicating that buying interest was concentrated in select stocks rather than broad-based. Immediate support is placed at 72,058 and 71,609, while resistance lies at 73,506 and 73,954. Holding above 72,058 could help the index consolidate and attempt a recovery, while a decisive break below this level would increase the risk of further weakness. A sustained move above 73,506 would be an important signal of improving short-term momentum.
