Indian Markets Extend Losing Streak as Crude Surge, Rising Yields and Geopolitical Risks Weigh on Sentiment

Market Wrap

Indian equities ended the week under pressure, with the Nifty falling 2.09% to 23,398, marking its fifth consecutive weekly decline. Friday remained volatile as rising geopolitical tensions and elevated crude prices triggered a sharp opening sell-off, although a recovery in HDFC Bank and select IT stocks helped limit losses, with the index finally closing 0.34% lower.

The biggest pressure point remains crude oil, with Brent moving above $104 a barrel after gaining more than 8% during the week amid disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea. Sustained high oil prices could increase India’s import bill, put pressure on inflation and the rupee, squeeze corporate margins and widen the current-account deficit.

Financial conditions are also tightening. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield is approaching 5%, while India’s 10-year government bond yield has moved above 7%, raising concerns about higher funding costs and continued pressure on equity valuations. Midcaps and smallcaps remained particularly vulnerable, while financials showed selective resilience.

There was, however, some relief on Friday as crude prices pulled back sharply and global equities recovered. The S&P 500, Dow Jones and Nasdaq gained 0.9%, 1% and 0.8%, respectively, providing a somewhat better global setup for the next session.

What's Ahead

Monday’s trading session is likely to remain highly volatile, with markets reopening after the weekend and a holiday. Traders will closely track crude oil prices, developments in the U.S.–Iran conflict, bond yields and the rupee.

Technically, 23,200–23,100 is the key support zone for the Nifty. On the upside, 23,500–23,555, followed by 23,620, will act as immediate resistance. A sustained break below support could deepen the current correction, while stability above resistance could provide room for a short-term recovery.

The major event risk is the U.S. FOMC meeting on September 15–16, particularly as higher oil prices, inflation concerns and elevated bond yields have complicated the outlook for U.S. monetary policy. Investors will also assess any geopolitical, trade or economic announcements emerging from the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

Overall, the near-term market bias remains cautious-to-bearish. A sustained decline in crude and easing geopolitical tensions could trigger a relief rally, but until there is greater clarity, traders may prefer a selective approach while investors focus on fundamentally stronger companies rather than chasing short-term rebounds.

Technical Outlook

Nifty 50

The NIFTY 50 closed 79.70 points lower at 23,398.10, extending its weak trend amid broad-based selling and negative market breadth. The index traded in a narrow range after opening lower and remained below pressure throughout the session, while the RSI hovering near the 30 level indicates continued weakness in momentum and keeps the technical setup cautious. Immediate support is placed at 23,127, followed by 22,960; a sustained break below these levels could intensify selling pressure. On the upside, 23,669 and 23,836 are the key resistance levels, and a decisive move above the first resistance would be required to signal meaningful improvement in the near-term trend.

BankNifty

The NIFTY Bank gained 134.60 points to close at 56,606.55 and displayed relative strength despite negative breadth, recovering from its intraday low and closing near the session high. The RSI moving above 40 signals an improvement in momentum and suggests that banking stocks are providing some stability to the broader market. The immediate support levels stand at 56,058 and 55,718, while 57,155 and 57,495 remain the key resistance levels. Holding above the 56,058 support zone could sustain the recovery attempt, whereas a break below 55,718 would weaken the short-term technical structure.

NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES

The NIFTY Financial Services index edged 0.10% higher to 25,545.40, supported by gains in select heavyweight financial stocks, although weak breadth indicates that the recovery lacks broad participation. The index continues to trade within a cautious technical setup, with selling pressure in several financial counters limiting the upside. Immediate support is placed at 25,222, followed by 25,022, while 25,869 and 26,069 represent the key resistance levels. Sustaining above the 25,222 zone could keep the index stable and allow a gradual recovery, while a decisive break below 25,022 would increase downside risks.

Sensex

The BSE Sensex declined 120.83 points to close at 74,781.76, with broad-based selling across metals, energy, financials and utilities outweighing gains in IT and select banking stocks. Negative breadth highlights the underlying weakness, although the index remains above its immediate support levels. The near-term support zone is placed at 73,879, followed by 73,320, and a break below these levels could accelerate the correction. On the upside, 75,685 and 76,244 are the key resistance levels; a sustained move above 75,685 would be needed to improve the short-term technical outlook.
