Sensex, Nifty Retreat as Crude Nears $106 and Inflation Risks Rise; US CPI and Q2 Earnings in Focus

Market Wrap
Indian equity markets ended lower on Wednesday as profit booking, persistent foreign institutional investor (FII) selling and elevated crude oil prices weighed on sentiment, erasing part of the previous session’s recovery. The Nifty 50 declined 0.44% to close at 22,622.70, while the Sensex fell 0.34% to 72,781.89. Both benchmarks experienced sharp intraday fluctuations, with buying emerging at lower levels but failing to sustain the upward momentum.
Sectoral performance remained mixed. FMCG stocks, particularly Nestlé, extended their gains for a second consecutive session, while IT stocks attracted selective buying following HCL Technologies' earnings update. In contrast, financial services and automobile stocks faced selling pressure, with Bajaj Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra and Bajaj Finserv among the notable laggards. The divergence in sectoral performance highlighted investors' preference for selective opportunities rather than broad-based market exposure.
Global uncertainty continued to influence sentiment ahead of key US inflation data, while Brent crude hovering around $106 per barrel remained a significant concern amid geopolitical supply risks. Elevated oil prices threaten to increase India's import bill, intensify inflationary pressures and weigh on corporate profitability. Domestically, the rupee strengthened following recent RBI measures aimed at curbing speculative currency positions, offering some relief. However, persistent foreign capital outflows continue to limit the market's recovery potential.
What's Ahead
Indian equities are likely to remain volatile as investors assess global inflation trends, crude oil movements, institutional flows and the ongoing Q2 FY27 earnings season. The latest US inflation figures showed headline CPI rising to 3.7% year-on-year in September from 3.4% in August, while core inflation increased to 2.6%. These readings could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve's monetary policy, with any renewed pressure on US bond yields and the dollar potentially weighing on emerging-market equities.
Domestic inflation has also become a concern. September retail inflation climbed to 5.54%, while wholesale inflation surged to 11.39%, raising questions about input costs, corporate margins and the RBI's policy outlook. With Brent crude near $106 per barrel, sustained energy price pressures could further complicate India's inflation outlook and increase pressure on the rupee.
On the earnings front, investors will assess results and management commentary from companies such as BHEL, Canara Bank and Groww for signs of improving business momentum and stock-specific opportunities.
Technically, the 22,600–22,500 zone is the immediate support area for the Nifty, while 22,750–22,850 represents the initial resistance band. Holding support could help stabilize the market, but a sustained move above resistance would be needed to strengthen the recovery. Conversely, a decisive break below 22,500 could invite further selling.
Overall, a cautious, range-bound session with stock-specific opportunities remains the likely base case. Investors should closely monitor crude oil, the rupee, FII activity, global bond yields and earnings reactions before concluding that a sustained market recovery is underway.

Technical Outlook
Nifty 50
The NIFTY 50 surged 358.60 points, or 1.60%, to close at 22,721.95, staging a strong recovery supported by broad-based buying and a sharp rally in IT stocks. The index opened at 22,364.15, touched an intraday low of 22,288.45 and closed at its session high, indicating sustained buying interest throughout the day. Market breadth was firmly positive, with 46 stocks advancing against just 4 declining, while the RSI moved above 40, signalling improving momentum. Easing bond yields and softer crude oil prices further supported sentiment. For the next session, immediate support is placed at 22,418 and 22,230, while resistance lies at 23,026 and 23,214. A sustained move above 23,026 could extend the recovery, whereas a decline below 22,418 may weaken the near-term setup.
BankNifty
The NIFTY BANK advanced 563.05 points, or 1.03%, to close at 55,481.05, as buying interest across most banking constituents supported the index. After opening marginally lower, the index recovered steadily and finished near its intraday high of 55,551.75, reflecting improving buying momentum. Market breadth remained positive, with 12 constituents advancing against 2 declining, while the RSI moved towards 50, indicating a gradual improvement in bullish momentum. Immediate support is placed at 54,811 and 54,397, while resistance levels stand at 56,151 and 56,565. Holding above 54,811 could help sustain the recovery, while a decisive move above 56,151 would strengthen the bullish setup and open the possibility of further upside.
NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES
The NIFTY Financial Services index gained 362.20 points, or 1.46%, to close at 25,228.55, supported by broad-based advances across lending, banking and financial services stocks. Shriram Finance led the gains, followed by Bajaj Finance and Cholamandalam Investment, while 17 constituents advanced against only 3 decliners, indicating strong participation in the recovery. The positive market breadth suggests improving near-term sentiment across the financial services segment. Immediate support is positioned at 24,937 and 24,756, while resistance is placed at 25,520 and 25,701. Sustaining above 24,937 could keep the recovery intact, whereas a decisive breakout above 25,520 would indicate stronger upward momentum.
Sensex
The BSE SENSEX jumped 1,109.10 points, or 1.54%, to close at 73,033.78, supported by a strong rally in IT stocks and widespread buying across heavyweight constituents. HCL Technologies and TCS led the advance following encouraging earnings-related developments, while gains in Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Hindustan Unilever and financial stocks further strengthened the index. Market participation was robust, with 27 stocks advancing against just 3 declining, reflecting a broad improvement in sentiment. The supplied data does not include the Sensex's support and resistance levels, so these cannot be stated reliably. Technically, holding above the previous session's breakout area would help preserve the recovery, while profit booking near overhead resistance remains possible after the sharp single-day rally.
