Indian Markets Extend Decline as Weak Global Cues and Persistent Selling Pressure Keep Bears in Control

Market Wrap
Indian equity markets witnessed another weak trading session on 15 July, with the Nifty opening sharply lower and remaining under pressure throughout the day. Although the index attempted an intraday recovery, the buying interest lacked conviction as every rebound attracted fresh selling, resulting in the benchmark closing near the day's low at 24,052. The price action reflected continued dominance by sellers and cautious investor sentiment.
The broader market also experienced profit booking, indicating that weakness extended beyond the benchmark indices. However, the Pharma sector bucked the trend, attracting defensive buying as investors sought relatively stable sectors amid rising market volatility.
Global markets provided little support after U.S. equities, led by the Nasdaq, recorded sharp overnight losses. The negative sentiment spilled over into Asian and European markets as investors remained cautious ahead of key U.S. inflation and economic data, which could shape expectations regarding the Federal Reserve's future interest rate decisions.
What's Ahead
Markets are expected to remain cautious in the near term as the Nifty continues to trade below important support levels. Investor attention will increasingly shift toward the ongoing corporate earnings season, where management commentary on demand trends, margins, and future growth prospects is likely to have a greater impact on stock performance than headline earnings alone.
Global developments will remain equally important, with investors tracking upcoming U.S. macroeconomic data, expectations surrounding the Federal Reserve's policy outlook, international trade developments, bond yield movements, and crude oil prices. Until stronger buying interest returns, market action is likely to remain stock-specific with elevated volatility.

Technical Outlook
Nifty 50
Nifty 50 ended the session with a small bearish candle after opening sharply lower, reflecting indecision as the index consolidated in a narrow range despite the weak close. Although selling pressure persisted through the latter half of the session, the index continues to trade above its short-term EMA, indicating that the broader recovery structure remains intact. Momentum indicators also suggest a neutral-to-positive bias, with the RSI at 51.67 near the midpoint and the MACD remaining above its signal line despite a weakening histogram. In the derivatives market, a PCR of 1.06 and Max Pain at 24,050 indicate a balanced market with mild bullish undertones. For the next session, 23,800–23,850 remains the key support zone, while 24,200–24,250 is the immediate resistance. As long as Nifty sustains above its support levels, the recent decline is likely to be viewed as a healthy correction, though a decisive move beyond either side of the current range will determine the next directional trend.
Bank Nifty
Bank Nifty witnessed profit booking after its recent rally, closing lower and forming a bearish candlestick as persistent selling in PSU banking stocks weighed on sentiment. Despite the weakness, the index continues to hold above its 20-Day EMA, suggesting that the medium-term trend remains constructive. The RSI at 52.83 remains above the neutral 50 mark, indicating that underlying strength has not been completely eroded even as short-term momentum has softened. Immediate support is placed in the 57,000–57,300 zone, while 57,900–58,000 remains the key resistance area. A sustained hold above the 20-Day EMA could encourage fresh buying interest, whereas a breakdown below 57,000 may trigger additional corrective pressure. Until then, the current decline is likely to be viewed as a normal pullback within an overall positive trend.
Sensex
The Sensex remained under selling pressure throughout the session, forming a bearish candle after a sharp gap-down opening, although it managed to stabilise near the close. The index is currently testing its short-term moving average support and continues to consolidate within a well-defined 76,200–78,000 trading range. Momentum indicators have moderated, with the RSI easing to 53.21 and the MACD losing some of its earlier bullish momentum, reflecting a cooling trend rather than a decisive reversal. Immediate support is seen between 76,200–76,500, while 77,700–78,000 remains the key resistance zone. A break below support could accelerate profit booking, whereas a sustained move above resistance would revive bullish momentum. Until a breakout occurs, the broader technical setup suggests a sideways market with stock-specific opportunities.
