Sensex and Nifty Extend Losses as Inflation Rises to 5.54%; Crude Oil and FII Outflows Keep Sentiment Weak

Market Wrap

Indian equity markets began the week on a weak note as early optimism faded into selling pressure, with the Nifty 50 declining 0.70% to 22,363.35 and the Sensex falling 547.65 points, or 0.76%, to 71,924.68. Despite a gap-up opening, both benchmarks struggled to sustain the recovery, indicating that investors remain cautious and selling pressure persists at higher levels. Sectoral performance was mixed, with media stocks gaining over 4% intraday, while auto and realty stocks showed relative resilience. FMCG, IT and PSU banking stocks faced pressure, contributing to the broader market weakness.

Domestic inflation emerged as a major concern after India's September retail inflation accelerated to 5.54% from 4.83% in August, reinforcing worries about persistent price pressures following the RBI's recent 25-basis-point repo rate hike to 5.50%. Higher borrowing costs could weigh on consumption, credit demand and corporate earnings if inflation remains elevated. On the currency front, the rupee strengthened by around 1% to ₹95.77 per US dollar after the RBI introduced measures to curb dollar demand and stabilise the currency, offering some relief to import-dependent businesses.

However, the broader market environment remained challenging as elevated crude oil prices, persistent foreign investor outflows, high U.S. Treasury yields and geopolitical uncertainty continued to constrain risk appetite. Global markets remained mixed, while investors assessed the implications of upcoming U.S. inflation data and the ongoing corporate earnings season. Overall, the session reflected a fragile market structure in which early buying interest continued to encounter selling pressure, with macroeconomic concerns limiting the scope for a sustained recovery.

What's Ahead

The immediate focus for the next session will be whether the Nifty can defend the 22,300 support zone, with the next support positioned near 22,150. On the upside, resistance is expected around 22,580, and a decisive move above this level could open the way toward 22,800. Until the index establishes a sustained recovery above resistance, the near-term outlook remains cautious, with volatility likely to persist.

Investors will closely track crude oil prices and developments in the Middle East, as sustained energy-cost pressures could widen India's import bill, intensify inflationary risks and constrain the RBI's policy flexibility. The September inflation reading of 5.54% has increased the importance of upcoming domestic economic indicators, while U.S. inflation data, Treasury yields and global central-bank expectations could influence foreign portfolio flows and emerging-market sentiment.

Technical Outlook

Nifty 50

The NIFTY 50 declined 157.10 points, or 0.70%, to close at 22,363.35, reversing the previous session's gains as selling pressure across key sectors dragged the benchmark lower. The index slipped to an intraday low of 22,304.45, while market breadth remained weak, with 36 stocks declining against 13 advancing. The RSI remained below 40, indicating persistent bearish momentum, with rising bond yields and elevated crude oil prices continuing to weigh on sentiment. Immediate support is placed at 22,054 and 21,863, while resistance stands at 22,672 and 22,863. The near-term outlook remains cautious, and a sustained move above 22,672 would be required to signal improving momentum. Conversely, a decisive break below 22,054 could expose the index to further downside.

BankNifty

The NIFTY BANK fell 338.65 points, or 0.61%, to settle at 54,918.00, as widespread selling across banking constituents outweighed limited gains in select stocks. The index reversed its early advances and closed closer to the lower end of its intraday range, with 13 of the 14 constituents ending in the red. The RSI moving toward 40 signals weakening momentum and suggests that the index remains vulnerable to further selling. Immediate support levels are placed at 54,237 and 53,816, while resistance is positioned at 55,599 and 56,020. A sustained recovery above 55,599 could improve the near-term technical setup, while a break below 54,237 would increase downside risks.

NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES

The NIFTY Financial Services index declined 102.15 points, or 0.41%, to close at 24,866.35, as losses in major banking and financial stocks offset gains in select lenders and non-banking financial companies. Despite advances in PFC, LIC Housing Finance and BSE, market breadth remained negative, with 13 constituents declining against 7 advancing. This lack of broad-based participation suggests that buying interest remains selective and the index could continue to face pressure in the near term. Immediate support is placed at 24,561 and 24,372, while resistance stands at 25,172 and 25,361. A sustained move above 25,172 could signal improving sentiment, whereas a breakdown below 24,561 would strengthen the bearish outlook.

Sensex

The BSE Sensex declined 547.65 points, or 0.76%, to finish at 71,924.68, reflecting broad-based selling across heavyweight constituents. Market breadth was decisively negative, with 23 stocks declining against only 7 advancing, as losses in ITC, Tech Mahindra, Hindustan Unilever, Larsen & Toubro and SBI weighed on the benchmark. Gains in BEL, M&M and Kotak Mahindra Bank provided limited support but failed to offset the broader weakness. Immediate support is placed at 71,041 and 70,494, while resistance levels stand at 72,809 and 73,356. The near-term outlook remains under pressure, with a sustained move above 72,809 needed to indicate a recovery in momentum. A decisive break below 71,041 could expose the index to further downside toward the next support zone.
