Indian Markets Under Pressure as Crude Nears $90 and Nifty Slips Below 24,500

Market Wrap
Indian equity markets extended their cautious trend as broad-based selling pushed the Nifty down 0.47%, taking the index below the crucial 24,500 psychological level and close to its 89-day EMA. The decline reflected persistent risk aversion, with financials and other rate-sensitive segments facing notable pressure. The weakness in the Nifty PSU Bank Index was particularly significant after the index breached its previous swing low and the 50-day EMA, increasing the risk of further near-term downside.
Defensive positioning was visible in the pharma space, where the sectoral index gained more than 1.5%, making it one of the strongest performers during the session. The divergence between defensive sectors and rate-sensitive segments suggests that investors are becoming increasingly selective as domestic earnings strength competes with a more challenging global macro backdrop.
Global developments remained a major source of uncertainty. Brent crude moved closer to $90 a barrel as expectations of a near-term U.S.-Iran agreement weakened and concerns surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz resurfaced. Higher crude prices are particularly important for India given its dependence on imported oil and could increase pressure on the rupee, inflation expectations and corporate margins.
The rupee weakened further to around ₹95.44 against the U.S. dollar, adding to the pressure on domestic sentiment. With crude and currency risks moving in an unfavourable direction, investors are likely to remain cautious despite relatively resilient domestic earnings.
What's Ahead
The near-term market direction is likely to remain closely tied to global cues. Crude oil prices, developments around the Strait of Hormuz and the evolving U.S.-Iran situation will remain key variables for Indian equities. A sustained rise in oil prices could increase concerns around India's inflation outlook and external balance while putting additional pressure on the rupee.
Investors will also focus on the U.S. July CPI data, which could influence expectations around the Federal Reserve's future rate path and global liquidity conditions. Any surprise on the inflation front could affect U.S. bond yields, the dollar and foreign portfolio flows into emerging markets.
On the domestic front, India's inflation data due on August 12 will be closely watched, particularly against the backdrop of rising crude prices. With the RBI maintaining the repo rate at 5.25%, a renewed inflationary impulse could reduce expectations of further monetary easing.
Technically, 24,500 remains an important psychological level for the Nifty. A sustained move below this zone could keep the broader market vulnerable to further selling, while any recovery would need participation from financials and other cyclical sectors—not just defensive pockets such as pharma—to confirm a meaningful improvement in market breadth and sentiment.

Technical Outlook
Nifty 50
The NIFTY 50 declined 112.10 points, or 0.46%, to close at 24,471.70, extending its corrective move amid broad-based selling. The index traded in a narrow range before closing near the middle of the session, while the RSI slipped below 60, indicating a moderation in bullish momentum. Weak market breadth, with 37 stocks declining against 13 advancing, further highlights the lack of broad-based buying support. The index is currently facing resistance in the 24,747–24,918 zone, while immediate support is placed at 24,196–24,026. A sustained move above 24,747 could improve the near-term setup, whereas a break below 24,196 may increase downside pressure.
BankNifty
The NIFTY BANK declined 240.70 points, or 0.42%, to close at 57,446.25 as weakness across major private-sector lenders weighed on the index. The index recovered from its intraday low but failed to sustain the rebound, while the RSI slipped toward the 50 mark, signalling weakening momentum and a shift toward a bearish near-term bias. Market breadth remained weak, with only four stocks advancing against nine declines. The index faces immediate resistance at 57,971–58,296, while support is positioned at 56,921–56,597. Holding above 56,921 could help stabilise the trend, while a decisive break below this level may open room for further correction.
Sensex
The BSE SENSEX declined 388.19 points, or 0.49%, to close at 78,154.25, extending its decline as selling across banking, auto and other heavyweight stocks outweighed gains in select IT and consumer names. Market breadth was notably weak, with 25 stocks declining against just five advancing, indicating broad-based selling pressure. The index remains below its immediate resistance zone of 79,020–79,556, while downside support is placed at 77,288–76,753. Holding above 77,288 could provide a base for a recovery, but a decisive break below this level would weaken the near-term technical structure further.
NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES
The NIFTY Financial Services index declined 112.90 points, or 0.43%, to close at 26,432.40, with broad-based selling across banking, NBFC and insurance stocks keeping the index under pressure. Negative breadth, with 15 constituents declining against only five advancing, indicates that selling remained widespread across the financial space. The index is currently positioned below its immediate resistance zone of 26,742–26,933, while support is placed at 26,123–25,931. A recovery above 26,742 would improve the short-term setup, whereas a sustained break below 26,123 could signal further weakness in the financial segment.
