Nifty Slips Below 22,600 After RBI Rate Hike as Tighter Policy, Crude and FII Selling Keep Markets Volatile

Market Wrap

Indian equities reversed their two-day recovery on Wednesday as the RBI’s 25-basis-point repo-rate hike to 5.50% and its shift toward a “calibrated tightening” stance triggered profit booking and renewed concerns over borrowing costs. The Nifty 50 declined 0.76% to 22,603, while the Sensex fell 0.59% to 72,638, with rate-sensitive segments bearing much of the pressure. Metal stocks were among the weaker pockets, while PSU banks and select private lenders showed relative resilience, supported by expectations of improved lending margins.

The RBI's policy decision represents a significant shift in the domestic monetary environment. While the central bank raised its FY27 growth forecast to 7.1% from 6.7%, it also increased its inflation projection to 5.2% from 5.0%, reflecting concerns over higher energy prices and tighter global financial conditions. With Brent crude around $102 per barrel and the rupee near ₹96.4/$, imported inflation and rising corporate input costs remain important risks for the broader market.

Foreign flows also remained a headwind, with FIIs selling ₹2,961 crore on October 6, while DIIs provided a strong counterbalance through purchases of ₹5,089 crore. At the stock level, Titan, JSW Cement, Mphasis and HCLTech-related developments could continue to drive company-specific action as investors increasingly differentiate between companies based on earnings and business fundamentals.

What's Ahead

The immediate global trigger for the October 8 session will be the U.S. Federal Reserve's FOMC minutes, which could provide further clues about the central bank's rate trajectory and its assessment of inflation and growth risks. A hawkish tone could strengthen the dollar and push U.S. Treasury yields higher, potentially adding pressure on emerging-market equities, while a more accommodative tone could improve global risk appetite.

Domestically, the market will closely watch whether the Nifty can sustain the 22,600 region following the RBI-driven decline. Crude oil remaining above $100, the rupee around ₹96/$, and continued FII selling could keep sentiment fragile. At the same time, strong DII buying and resilient economic growth could provide downside support.

With the RBI now moving toward tighter monetary policy even as growth expectations remain strong, the near-term market setup is likely to remain volatile and stock-specific rather than trend-driven. Investors should focus on global yields, currency and crude movements alongside earnings and company-specific developments.

Technical Outlook

Nifty 50

The NIFTY 50 gained 220.35 points, or 0.98%, to close at 22,776.10, extending its recovery amid broad-based buying and improved global cues. The index opened at 22,603.25, held above its opening level throughout the session and closed at the day's high, indicating strong buying momentum. Market breadth was positive, with 32 stocks advancing against 18 declining, while easing crude oil prices and retreating bond yields provided additional support. The RSI has improved toward 40, suggesting a gradual recovery in momentum after the recent oversold phase. Immediate support is placed at 22,476 and 22,290, while 23,076 and 23,262 remain the key resistance levels. Sustained movement above 23,076 could strengthen the recovery, while failure to hold 22,476 could revive selling pressure.

BankNifty

The NIFTY BANK advanced 414.30 points, or 0.76%, to 55,128.40, supported by gains in heavyweight private-sector banks, particularly Kotak Bank, IndusInd Bank and Axis Bank. The index opened higher, remained largely firm through the session and strengthened toward the close, although market breadth was evenly split with seven stocks advancing and seven declining. The RSI hovering near 40 indicates a modest improvement in momentum, but the index still needs to clear its immediate resistance zone to establish stronger upside traction. Support is positioned at 54,447 and 54,026, while resistance stands at 55,809 and 56,231. A sustained breakout above 55,809 could strengthen the recovery, whereas a move below 54,447 would weaken the near-term setup.

NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES

The NIFTY Financial Services index rose 289.65 points, or 1.17%, to 24,946.05, outperforming the broader Nifty as buying remained widespread across financial counters. Fifteen stocks advanced against only five declines, with BSE, Kotak Bank, Jio Financial, HDFC Life and SBI Life among the notable contributors. The positive breadth indicates stronger participation behind the recovery, although the index is approaching an important resistance zone. Immediate support is placed at 24,641 and 24,452, while 25,251 and 25,440 are the key resistance levels. A sustained move above 25,251 could open the way for further recovery, while holding above 24,641 would keep the short-term structure constructive.

Sensex

The BSE Sensex climbed 685.34 points, or 0.95%, to 73,067.81, extending its rebound on the back of strong gains across several heavyweight stocks. Trent led the advance with a sharp gain, while Kotak Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Reliance and Indigo also contributed significantly. Market breadth remained favourable, with 19 stocks advancing, 9 declining and 2 unchanged, indicating broad participation in the recovery. The index is now approaching its key resistance zone, with 73,952 and 74,499 as the next upside levels, while 72,184 and 71,637 provide immediate support. Sustaining above 72,184 would keep the recovery intact, while a decisive breakout above 73,952 could improve the broader short-term technical outlook.
