Nifty Extends Losing Streak to Eight Weeks as FII Selling, High Crude and Bond Yields Keep Markets Under Pressure

Market Wrap
Indian equities enter the new week in a deeply cautious setup after the Nifty 50 recorded its eighth consecutive weekly decline, falling 3.11% to close at 22,421.95, while the Sensex ended the final session around 71,909.70 after a sharp 570-point fall. The sell-off remained broad-based, with persistent FII outflows, elevated U.S. Treasury yields, rupee weakness and high crude oil prices continuing to weigh on investor sentiment. Foreign investors sold around ₹44,013 crore in September and another ₹9,484 crore on October 1, although strong DII buying has provided some cushion.
The auto sector emerged as a major drag, with the Nifty Auto index falling more than 3% following mixed September sales numbers. Bajaj Auto declined nearly 8% after its 5.38 lakh-unit sales missed expectations, while M&M, Eicher Motors and Maruti also came under pressure. The weakness highlights growing sensitivity to earnings expectations as investors reassess valuations amid a challenging macro environment.
Despite the market weakness, domestic economic indicators offered some encouragement. India's September Manufacturing PMI rebounded to 55.1 from 52.8, reaching a seven-month high as domestic and export demand strengthened and hiring improved. This suggests that underlying economic activity remains relatively resilient despite tighter financial conditions.
Global cues were somewhat more supportive, with U.S. equities ending higher after weak non-farm payroll growth strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve may avoid another rate hike in October. However, elevated Treasury yields remain a key risk for emerging markets. Meanwhile, Brent crude around the $100+ zone continues to raise concerns over India's import bill, inflation and currency stability.
Overall, the market remains firmly in a risk-off and high-volatility phase, with a durable recovery likely to require improvement in foreign flows, crude prices, bond yields and earnings expectations rather than relying solely on technical buying at lower levels.
What's Ahead
The October 5–7 RBI Monetary Policy Committee meeting will be the biggest domestic trigger this week. Markets will closely watch the RBI's stance on inflation, the rupee and interest rates, particularly as stronger growth and renewed inflationary pressures have increased expectations of a possible 25-basis-point rate hike. Such a move could add pressure to rate-sensitive sectors including banks, automobiles and real estate.
The focus will also shift toward the Q2 FY27 earnings season, with TCS scheduled to report on October 8 and DMart on October 10. Management commentary on demand, margins and earnings guidance could become increasingly important following the recent market correction.
Technically, 22,400–22,200 is emerging as a crucial support zone for the Nifty. Holding this region could create the conditions for a relief rebound, while a sustained recovery above 22,500–22,600 would be needed to signal that selling pressure is beginning to ease.
For the week ahead, investors should closely monitor RBI policy, crude oil, U.S. Treasury yields, FII flows, the rupee, Q2 earnings and geopolitical developments. A simultaneous improvement in these factors could trigger a sharp rebound after eight consecutive weekly declines; otherwise, the market remains vulnerable to further selling and elevated volatility.

Technical Outlook
Nifty 50
The NIFTY 50 declined 198.50 points, or 0.88%, to 22,421.95, extending its bearish trend amid broad-based selling. The index fell to an intraday low of 22,217.30 and closed closer to the lower end of the day's range, while market breadth remained heavily negative with 37 stocks declining against just 13 advancing. The RSI has fallen further below 30, indicating deeply oversold conditions, but momentum remains firmly bearish as elevated crude prices and rising U.S. bond yields continue to weigh on sentiment. For the next session, 22,097 and 21,896 are the immediate support levels, while 22,747 and 22,947 remain key resistance levels. A sustained recovery above 22,747 would be required to signal some stabilization, while a break below 22,097 could open the way for further downside.
BankNifty
The NIFTY BANK slipped 182.30 points, or 0.33%, to 54,450.75, as selling across both private and public-sector lenders outweighed gains in select heavyweight banks. The index recovered from an intraday low of 54,066.60 but failed to sustain its rebound and closed lower, with 10 constituents declining against only 4 advancing. The RSI remains near 30, highlighting continued weakness in momentum and keeping the short-term setup cautious. Immediate support is placed at 53,693 and 53,224, while resistance stands at 55,208 and 55,677. Holding above 53,693 could help the index attempt a recovery, but a decisive break below this level would increase the risk of another leg lower.
NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES
The NIFTY Financial Services index declined 93.40 points, or 0.38%, to 24,556.10, as broad-based weakness across lending and financial-service stocks offset gains in select banking and insurance counters. Fourteen constituents ended lower against only six gainers, indicating weak participation and continued selling pressure across the sector. The index remains below its immediate resistance zone, while the broader setup continues to favour caution amid pressure on financial stocks. 24,233 and 24,032 are the key near-term support levels, while 24,880 and 25,080 are the important resistance levels. A sustained move above 24,880 could improve the short-term structure, whereas a break below 24,233 would reinforce the bearish bias.
Sensex
The BSE Sensex fell 570.59 points, or 0.79%, to 71,909.70, recording another sharp decline as selling in automobiles, metals and consumer stocks dragged the benchmark lower. Market breadth was particularly weak, with 24 stocks declining against only 6 advancing, although gains in technology stocks such as Infosys, TCS and HCL Technologies provided some support. The index remains under significant pressure following the latest sell-off, and the immediate technical focus is on 70,932 and 70,327 as support levels. On the upside, 72,888 and 73,493 are the key resistance zones. Holding above 70,932 could allow a technical rebound, but a decisive break below 70,327 would signal a further deterioration in the short-term trend.
