Nifty Extends Winning Streak to Five Sessions, Nears 24,000 as Mid- and Small-Caps Outperform

Market Wrap
Indian equity markets extended their winning streak to five consecutive sessions on Wednesday, November 4, as sustained buying interest across several sectors lifted benchmark indices closer to the psychologically important 24,000 mark. The Nifty 50 advanced 149.75 points, or 0.63%, to close at 23,960.60, while the Sensex gained 383.55 points, or 0.50%, to settle at 77,301.40.
The broader market outperformed the frontline indices, reflecting stronger participation in mid- and small-cap stocks. The Nifty Midcap 100 advanced 1.55% to 59,505.50, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 2.00% to close at 19,026.40. Within the Nifty 50, 36 stocks advanced against 14 declining, indicating positive market breadth. Realty and defence stocks were among the notable gainers, while information technology stocks remained under pressure, with the Nifty IT index declining 1.50%.
Institutional activity also supported market sentiment, as foreign institutional investors recorded provisional net purchases of ₹7,284.03 crore on November 4, compared with domestic institutional investors' net sales of ₹3,712.23 crore. The stronger foreign buying provided additional support to the ongoing market recovery.
Global cues remained mixed. In the latest completed US session, the Dow Jones declined 0.4%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq gained 0.4% and 0.8%, respectively. Asian markets also delivered a mixed performance, with gains in China and South Korea offset by losses in Japan and Taiwan.
Overall, the market continued to demonstrate resilience, supported by foreign institutional buying and broad-based participation. However, persistent weakness in IT stocks and the Nifty's proximity to the 24,000 mark remain important factors to monitor.
What's Ahead
The Nifty's ability to sustain its upward momentum and move decisively above 24,000 will be the key near-term focus. After five consecutive sessions of gains, some profit booking cannot be ruled out, particularly as the index approaches this important psychological level. Continued participation from heavyweight stocks and broader-market segments will remain essential for sustaining the recovery.
Crude oil prices will remain another important variable. Brent crude was quoted at $103.34 per barrel in early trading on Wednesday, November 4, according to Reuters. Any sustained increase in oil prices could raise concerns over India's import bill, inflation and the currency outlook, potentially weighing on market sentiment.
Investors will also track September-quarter earnings announcements, with revenue growth, operating margins, profitability and management guidance likely to drive stock-specific movements. The continued weakness in IT stocks will remain in focus as investors assess sector earnings and global technology-sector sentiment.
Globally, the outcome of the US midterm elections and its implications for the Trump administration's legislative agenda could influence investor sentiment. Developments in Asian markets, US equities and global technology stocks will also remain important for domestic market direction.
Overall, the near-term outlook remains cautiously positive, supported by the five-session rally, stronger broader-market participation and net foreign institutional buying. However, the market's ability to sustain buying interest above 24,000 will be critical in determining whether the recovery can extend further.

Technical Outlook
Nifty 50
The NIFTY 50 advanced 370.05 points, or 1.58%, to close at 23,810.85, extending its upward momentum on broad-based buying across FMCG, consumer, banking and telecom stocks. The index opened at 23,582.25, touched an intraday low of 23,482.80 and closed at its session high, indicating sustained buying interest throughout the day. Market breadth remained positive, with 39 stocks advancing against 10 declining, while the RSI moved closer to 60, signalling strengthening bullish momentum. Lower crude oil prices and positive corporate earnings sentiment further supported the recovery. Immediate support is placed at 23,471 and 23,261, while resistance lies at 24,150 and 24,360. A sustained move above 24,150 could extend the rally, while a decline below 23,471 may weaken the near-term bullish setup.
BankNifty
The NIFTY BANK gained 537.85 points, or 0.98%, to close at 55,540.05, supported by strong buying in private-sector banking stocks, although losses across several public-sector lenders limited the advance. The index opened at 55,435.80, touched an intraday low of 55,174.10 and recovered to close near its session high of 55,739.00. Despite negative market breadth, with 9 constituents declining against 5 advancing, the RSI crossed above 50, indicating improving bullish momentum. Immediate support is placed at 54,964 and 54,608, while resistance stands at 56,116 and 56,472. Sustaining above 54,964 could help preserve the recovery, while a decisive move above 56,116 would strengthen the bullish outlook.
NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES
The NIFTY Financial Services index surged 458.85 points, or 1.84%, to close at 25,357.90, outperforming the broader banking index on strong buying across banking, lending and insurance stocks. Market breadth was firmly positive, with 17 stocks advancing against just 3 declining, reflecting broad participation in the rally. Gains in BSE, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Shriram Finance supported the index, while limited selling in select public-sector financial stocks had little impact on the overall advance. Immediate support is positioned at 25,049 and 24,858, while resistance lies at 25,667 and 25,858. Holding above 25,049 could sustain the positive momentum, while a decisive breakout above 25,667 may open the way for further upside.
Sensex
The BSE SENSEX jumped 1,225.07 points, or 1.62%, to close at 76,917.85, supported by strong buying across FMCG, telecom, banking and consumer stocks. The index benefited from gains in Hindustan Unilever, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank and Asian Paints, while market breadth remained firmly positive, with 25 stocks advancing against 5 declining. The strong participation across heavyweight stocks indicates improving near-term sentiment and a continuation of the recovery. Immediate support is placed at 75,864 and 75,212, while resistance stands at 77,972 and 78,624. Holding above 75,864 could help maintain the bullish structure, while a sustained move above 77,972 would strengthen the possibility of further gains toward the next resistance zone.
