Market outlook for 01 October 2026
Indian Markets Start October on Weak Footing as Nifty Tests 22,600; Crude, Rupee and FII Selling Keep Pressure Elevated

Market Wrap
Indian equities remained under pressure as the September expiry ended on a weak note. The Nifty 50 fell 0.28% to 22,716, extending the month’s decline to more than 1,600 points, or around 6.5%. The index opened lower and faced early selling, although a late-session recovery helped pare some of the losses.
Selling remained broad-based, with consumer durables, realty and IT among the weaker sectors. In contrast, metals found buying support around last week’s lows, while pharma and media also showed relative resilience. Mid- and small-cap stocks continued to face pressure, reflecting the broader risk-off tone.
Global cues remained unfavorable as weak U.S. markets and continuing uncertainty around the Iran–U.S. conflict and Strait of Hormuz kept investors cautious. Elevated crude prices remained a key concern, with Brent briefly moving above $100 per barrel. The rise in oil prices is particularly significant for India because it can increase inflationary pressure, widen external vulnerabilities and weigh on the rupee.
The Indian rupee closed near ₹95.98 per dollar after touching ₹96.15, adding another layer of pressure to market sentiment. Rising crude prices, U.S. Treasury yields and geopolitical uncertainty remain important variables for foreign investor flows and domestic risk appetite.
What's Ahead
The 22,600 region will be the immediate level to watch. The market's ability to hold this zone could determine whether the recent correction begins to stabilize or whether selling pressure extends further.
Investors will closely track crude oil prices, the rupee, U.S. Treasury yields and developments surrounding U.S. - Iran tensions. Upcoming U.S. inflation data could also influence expectations for the Federal Reserve's monetary - policy path and, in turn, global liquidity and emerging-market flows.
Domestically, attention is gradually shifting toward the RBI's October policy meeting. Rising inflationary pressures, elevated energy costs and currency weakness have led some economists to discuss the possibility of tighter monetary policy, adding another variable for markets to assess.
With foreign selling still elevated and macroeconomic risks unresolved, October could begin with heightened volatility and greater stock-specific differentiation rather than a broad-based recovery.

Technical Outlook
Nifty 50
The NIFTY 50 closed 95.75 points lower at 22,620.45, extending its recent weakness and ending close to the intraday low of 22,595.20. The index continues to face selling pressure, with the RSI falling below 30, indicating an oversold condition but also highlighting the weakness in near-term momentum. Market breadth remained negative, with 32 stocks declining against 17 advancing, while heavyweight losses in healthcare and consumer stocks added pressure. For the next session, 22,600 remains an important near-term zone, with immediate support placed at 22,379 and 22,230. On the upside, 22,862 and 23,011 are the key resistance levels. A sustained move above the first resistance could indicate some recovery in momentum, while a break below 22,379 could expose the index to further downside.
BankNifty
The NIFTY BANK gained 373.10 points, or 0.69%, to close at 54,633.05, showing relative strength against the broader market. The index recovered from its intraday low of 54,174.30 and closed higher as most banking constituents advanced, with Union Bank, Kotak Bank, IndusInd Bank and IDFC First Bank among the notable gainers. Market breadth was also positive, with 10 stocks advancing against 4 declining. The RSI moving toward 40 suggests some improvement in momentum, although the index remains below key resistance levels. Immediate support is placed at 53,875 and 53,407, while 55,391 and 55,860 remain the key resistance zones. Sustaining above the 54,000–54,200 area could help maintain the recent recovery attempt, while a break below 53,875 would weaken the setup.
NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES
The NIFTY Financial Services index was largely unchanged at 24,649.50, gaining just 1 point as strength in select financial stocks offset weakness elsewhere. ICICI General Insurance, Kotak Bank, ICICI Bank and REC were among the stronger performers, while BSE, LIC Housing Finance, SBI Life and HDFC Bank weighed on the index. Market breadth remained weak, with 12 stocks declining against 8 advancing, suggesting limited participation behind the flat headline performance. The index has immediate support at 24,327 and 24,127, while resistance is placed at 24,972 and 25,172. The near-term setup remains range-bound, with a sustained move beyond either side of this range likely to provide greater clarity on the next directional move.
Sensex
The BSE Sensex declined 48.78 points, or 0.07%, to close at 72,480.29, outperforming the Nifty on a relative basis but remaining under pressure amid weak market breadth. The index traded between 72,236.61 and 72,977.50 before closing lower, with losses in Eternal, Sun Pharma, Titan and Tata Steel offsetting gains in Kotak Bank, ICICI Bank and Indigo. Market breadth remained negative, with 17 stocks declining against 13 advancing, indicating that the modest headline decline still reflected broader selling pressure. Immediate support is positioned at 71,684 and 71,192, while resistance stands at 73,276 and 73,769. Holding above 71,684 could help stabilize the index, whereas a decisive break below this level would keep the short-term structure under pressure.
