Berkshire Hathaway trims Apple holding, adds ~$4.9 billion stake in Alphabet

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK) has once again cut its stake in Apple Inc. (AAPL) and simultaneously added a large position—approximately US$4.3-4.9 billion—in Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL). These moves come as long-time CEO Warren Buffett prepares to step down, signalling a possible shift in the group’s equity priorities.

According to recent filings, Berkshire disclosed ownership of about 17.85 million shares of Alphabet as of 30 Sept 2025, representing roughly US$4.3 billion at the time.

At the same time, the Apple stake was trimmed from around 280 million shares to about 238.2 million shares.

Despite the cut, Apple remains Berkshire’s largest equity holding—reportedly valued at roughly US$60.7 billion.

The context: Buffett is preparing to hand over the CEO role, and this portfolio activity may hint at how the company might position its investments going forward.

Analysts note that the move into Alphabet is quite notable because Berkshire historically steered clear of large technology-platform style companies, focusing instead on more “classic” businesses.

Additional portfolio moves: Berkshire also trimmed its share in Bank of America and exited its position in D.R. Horton.

Meanwhile, Berkshire is sitting on a very large cash reserve (reported at roughly US$380-plus billion) giving it firepower for future investments.

What This Means

The trimming of Apple suggests Berkshire may believe the stock is richly valued, or that the next leg of opportunity lies elsewhere.

By acquiring a meaningful stake in Alphabet, Berkshire appears to recognise the transition toward cloud, AI and data-platform business models—areas Alphabet is heavily involved in.

For investors and market watchers in India (and globally), the shift is a reminder that even traditional value-oriented investors are adapting their portfolios to evolving technology frontiers.

For the Indian investor context: While these are U.S. stocks, the signal may encourage scrutiny of how global investment leaders view tech growth and valuation risks.

Note: This is not an investment recommendation—just an analysis of what the portfolio shift may imply.
