Trump’s Tariff Threat Rattles D-Street; Nifty Slips Below 24,650 as RBI Flags Inflation Risks

Market Wrap
Indian equities ended in the red on Wednesday, with the Sensex dropping 308 points to 80,710 and the Nifty 50 sliding 74 points to 24,649.55, as global and domestic concerns weighed heavily on sentiment. The sell-off intensified after former U.S. President Donald Trump proposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports, citing India's ongoing oil trade with Russia a move that spooked foreign investors and triggered renewed FII outflows.
Major indices were dragged down by heavyweights in banking, IT, FMCG, and oil & gas, with stocks like HDFC Bank, Reliance, and Infosys all ending lower. However, IndusInd Bank surged 4.7% on positive investor response to its new CEO announcement. The auto and metal sectors showed relative strength, offering modest gains.
On the macro front, the RBI held the repo rate steady at 6.5%, as widely expected, but its warning on rising food inflation and monsoon uncertainty dampened investor mood. Brent crude nearing $87/barrel added to inflation jitters. Meanwhile, Moody’s flagged India’s off-budget borrowings, raising fiscal sustainability concerns.
Globally, Wall Street saw gains of 0.5%–0.7% as weak U.S. jobs data revived hopes of a September Fed rate cut. Asian markets echoed the optimism, with the KOSPI jumping 1.6%, Nikkei gaining 0.5%, and ASX 200 up 1.2%.
What’s Ahead
With the RBI policy out of the way, markets will now closely watch Q1 earnings from Berger Paints, Castrol India, and Exide, along with any escalation or clarification on U.S.–India trade relations following Trump’s comments. Globally, attention will be on U.S. inflation expectations and China’s trade data, which could steer global risk appetite.
On the technical front, Nifty faces immediate support at 24,600–24,400, while resistance lies at 24,800–25,000. A breakout above 25,200 would be needed to reinstate bullish momentum, but until then, volatility is likely to remain elevated due to policy and geopolitical headwinds.
