Microsoft has announced a massive $17.5 billion investment in India to accelerate the country’s artificial intelligence infrastructure, digital skilling, and sovereign technology capabilities. The announcement was made by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella after his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 9.

Taking to social media platform X, Nadella described the discussions with the Prime Minister as inspiring and said the investment would support India’s AI-first ambitions. He added that the $17.5 billion commitment marks Microsoft’s largest investment ever in Asia and will focus on building advanced infrastructure, strengthening digital skills, and enabling sovereign AI capabilities within the country.

The latest announcement represents a significant expansion of Microsoft’s earlier India investment plan. On January 7 this year, Nadella had unveiled a $3 billion investment spread over two years aimed at building cloud capacity, expanding AI infrastructure, and rolling out skilling programmes across the country. The new commitment more than quintuples that earlier allocation, signalling a sharp acceleration of Microsoft’s strategic focus on India.

The expanded investment is expected to play a key role in strengthening India’s position as a global technology and AI hub, while also supporting government-led digital transformation and indigenous technology capabilities.
