HCLTech Makes Strategic AI Push Through Major Investment in Sarvam AI
HCLTech is set to anchor a $300 million funding round in Sarvam AI with a proposed $150 million investment, marking one of the largest strategic bets by an Indian IT services firm in the domestic artificial intelligence ecosystem. The deal signals a growing shift among Indian technology companies from pure services outsourcing toward ownership stakes in foundational AI platforms and infrastructure.

India’s artificial intelligence landscape is witnessing a significant strategic shift as HCLTech prepares to lead a proposed $300 million funding round in Sarvam AI at a reported valuation of $1.5 billion. According to a report, HCLTech is expected to invest nearly $150 million, making it the largest participant in the round.
The funding round is also expected to include participation from global investors such as Bessemer Venture Partners, which may invest around $50 million, alongside other backers including Nvidia, Prosperity7 Ventures, Activate and Glade Brook Capital. The remaining capital is expected to come from these investors and other participants, according to the report.
The development comes at a time when Indian IT companies are under pressure to demonstrate credible AI-led growth strategies amid slowing discretionary technology spending globally. Traditional outsourcing models are facing increasing automation risks as enterprises accelerate the adoption of generative AI tools to reduce software development, support, and operational costs.
Against that backdrop, HCLTech’s proposed investment appears to go beyond a financial allocation. The move reflects a broader strategic attempt by Indian IT firms to secure early positioning in the foundational AI stack rather than remaining downstream implementation partners. If completed, the transaction could place HCLTech among the first major Indian IT service providers to take a substantial ownership position in a domestic AI model and infrastructure company.
Sarvam AI has emerged as one of India’s most closely watched artificial intelligence startups, particularly in the development of indigenous large language models and AI infrastructure tailored to Indian languages and enterprise use cases. The company has increasingly attracted attention amid the Indian government’s push for sovereign AI capabilities and reduced dependence on foreign foundational models.
The timing of the investment is equally notable. Global AI funding has remained concentrated among infrastructure players, model developers, and semiconductor-linked ecosystems. Nvidia’s reported participation reinforces the growing alignment between chipmakers, cloud infrastructure providers, and AI application developers. Such strategic capital partnerships are becoming central to the AI industry’s next phase, where compute access and ecosystem integration may prove as important as model innovation itself.
For HCLTech, the investment could potentially create multiple long-term strategic advantages. A closer association with a domestic AI platform may strengthen its enterprise AI offerings, improve access to proprietary models, and help the company differentiate itself in a highly competitive IT services market. Indian IT majors have so far largely focused on AI integration services, productivity tools, and partnerships with global hyperscalers. Direct participation in a foundational AI company marks a deeper strategic commitment.
